Eh, Decent Movie, Poor Documentary

Contrary to what it is promoted as, or what the feature review will tell you, this is not a documentary about rap and hip hop. No, it's a movie of Ice-T shooting the *beep* with his favorite MCs. And as such a movie, it's actually pretty entertaining. Ice-T is clearly enjoying the hell out of himself, and some of the MCs are funny, and some are damn good.

As a documentary about the rise and evolution of rap, however, it falls very short. Ice-T talks a path from NY to Detroit to Cali, but he manages to pretty completely avoid The Dirty South and Texas. And while in NY, there is no sign of the Beastie Boys, who, like them or not, are crucially important in the history of rap. In fact, there is really only one mention of them by one of the MCs Ice-T talks to.

So as a documentary, it misses far too much that is important, and this kills it's value as a docu. But again, as just a fun movie of Ice and others enjoying themselves, it's pretty entertaining.
