Justice William O. Douglas...

In real life William O. Douglas holds the record among Justices for having had the most wives (four) and the most divorces while on the bench (three).

Douglas married Mildred Riddle on August 16, 1923. Mildred divorced Douglas on July 20, 1953.

On December 14, 1954, he married Mercedes Davidson (née Hester), whom he had been seeing while married to Mildred.

He married Joan Martin, a 23-year-old law student, on August 5, 1963, five days after his divorce from Mercedes was finalized.

He married Cathleen Heffernan, a 22-year old college student, on July 15, 1966, two weeks after his divorce from Joan was finalized. They remained together until his death.

I actually remember him. He was something else.

He was also one of the best justices that the United States ever appointed the the Supreme Court. Personal life aside, he was a man who stood up for justice, making him a shining light in the sea of darkness that is American history.

“As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air – however slight – lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness.”
- William O. Douglas, referring to the increased discretionary power given to police officers. Too bad nobody heeded his advice. Maybe the US wouldn't be a police-state if he had been taken seriously.
