Surely the notes displayed on the oscilloscope were fundamental waves not what would be produced by a piano.
A tuning fork would produce pure notes. but the sound produced from the piano is not pure (you can tell it's a piano as opposed to the same frequency on the violin)

The fundamental will be the overwhelming part of the sound though. Those were not pure sine waves on the screen.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if they cheated. This is TV after all.
