As worthy of an Oscar as Argo - our review

This is an accurate review. If had seen this with the other Oscar contenders before the awards season, this film would have been one of my top choices for the year. I actually think this film was better than Argo: the screenplay was more original and the performances were absolutely amazing. No sends a more humble message than Argo's self-masturbation of how an industry can have a political impact. We follow its main character, Rene, through his most vulnerable moments in keeping his family safe and his career balanced between making a living and maintaining his beliefs. I had no idea Bernal had it in him to carry an entire film. Why wasn't he nominated for best acting? Overall, a very good story on the budding democratization of Chile.

Indeed, No was stronger.
Better script (lovely touch of humor), more truthful, and also, better caracters definition.

An such an amazing performance from Bernal.

The Wizard'll sort it out. It's because of the wonderful things he does.

I liked Argo(despite Affleck) but this movie is so much better.

reply

no kidding. argo was slop.

If No had Clooney as a producer it would have gotten a nom.

Exactly. This is a great movie, handled brilliantly. It was better than that mediocre movie Argo on almost every category. If only it would have the support of famous people behind it and a famous cast in it, things would be different.

Gael Garcia Bernal is famous!

I said cast. Also he's not Ben Affleck famous.

And I can read. It's debatable as to whether or not Ben Affleck is as famous as Garcia in every circle; perhaps you can find a reputable link that shows he is ... I think for a Chilean and Latin American audience some of the cast are famous.

Do you even remember what I was talking about? You're getting off topic. They are not famous in Hollywood. I was talking about how could this movie score big on Oscars and having an international success. The answer is having someone like George Clooney behind your project and having famous big stars from Hollywood. They are not famous to American or worldwide audiences, forget that, even academy members.

Gael Garcia-Bernal is "known" in Hollywood. But just him.

And indeed "No" is better than "Argo". In a lot of aspects. At least they were nominated. That's a big deal for chilean film "industry".

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.

Argo felt about as fulfilling as a McDonalds to me. I couldn't believe the praise it got. It took me over a year to see No - finally saw it last night on DVD. This is great - fascinating not only as a story from recent history, but as a case study in marketing. This topic has been dealt with in films before, but this one impressed me.

Also remember that apart from a hollywood insider Affleck is an actor turned director, the biggest voting block by far in the academy are actors, so the support for him must be huge.

Another thing to add is Bernal hasn't starred in a mainstream hollywood film that was popular. So many actors in the academy would recognize him as that mexican actor, certainly not as a hollywood actor.
