Mathias is no Alain Delon
He does not have the charisma, the charm, the hypnotic style, the subtlety of Alain Delon. As for the beauty... Better not try to compare.

shareFunny ! I think Matthias is way more handsome & charismatic than Alain Delon. I also think he's the better actor.Delon has this tendency of playing himself in most of his movies.Matthias is by far more versatile.

Well, they're very different. If you're thinking about this role, then I must agree that there is no comparison: Schoenaerts was as catatonic in this as he was in "A Little Chaos" last year. But he can be a formidable actor in different roles. He may lack Delon's sexual magnetism and proper leading man charisma/screen presence, but, when he operates within a certain niche, he can be extremely interesting to watch and almost single-handedly make a film with his performance, as he did in "Bullhead". As for subtlety, they both have it, in different ways: sure Delon exceled at restrained acting and could easily create an icy killer ("Le Samourai") or tragically conflicted romantic hero ("The Professor") with just a few intense expressions. I don't see Schoenaerts as an equally great fit for those roles. But Matthias, as his ominousy twisted anti-heroes or villains ("Bullhead" or "The Drop"), shows an uncanny ability of conveying a naturally disturbing and upsetting vibe that it's hard to find in other actors. I can't quite see Alain in those roles.
So, even if he was disappointed in this, I still have faith in Schoenaerts and pray that he restores my wavering appreciation of his acting with his upcoming turn in Roskam's "Le Fidèle". I think he will.
Well, in a certain niche anyone is comfortable and can excel... A good actor explores and excels way beyond his/her niche...
I don't think Schoenaerts would be able to do for his life a role like Rocco or Tancredi, or even Ripley... He is, unfortunately, way too obtuse / opaque for such roles... Matter of fact, I don't see a director like Visconti or Clement (or Deray, for this matter) pick Schoenaerts for any role in any of their films... Watching him in this (unfortunate) remake of La Piscine makes one regret every second not seeing the original movie instead, and especially miss Alain Delon.

I won't argue on the first few points, but I find Mathias to be far more beautiful, and sexually appealing, than Alain. That's not to say I find Alain unattractive. I find him beautiful in the way I find most women (and David Bowie) beautiful. He just doesn't really do anything for me, if you catch my drift. As opposed to Mathias, who I find to be a smoldering, hunk of a man.

I think Matthias is incredibly sexy and charming. There's something about his quiet intensity. I liked him very much in this film. I first saw him in Rust and Bone (De rouille et d'os), with Marion Cotillard, and was very impressed. I agree that he can unfortunately be wooden, as in A Little Chaos, but I usually look forward to seeing him in a film.
And all the pieces matter (The Wire)share
Delon was always a very opaque actor whose motivations always seemed ambiguous. That worked in the Visconti films and some others (though Delon could be pretty bad as he was in La Piscine).
shareHe's done much better work than this. This movie was just the biggest piece of
s hit that was ever made. So I wouldn't judge him just on the basis of this garbage.
