Plodding, sulky, and unremarkable

This movie seemed like an exercise in determining how little plot an audience will accept and still watch a movie to the end. For me the answer was, "More than this", as I crapped out about 40 minutes in. And even at that, I kept saying to myself that something was bound to happen soon. So for anyone who did watch the whole thing, I'm asking IMDB for the first time, PLEASE write a thread about plot spoilers. Does anything actually tie up or get resolved?

Also, can someone explain in what year this movie was supposed to take place? You had a dad with cheesy 70's hair and mustache, a beat up K-Car, and an adolescent daughter who never searched the Internet to find out what having her first period was about. But he also had a cell phone.
