Do the obvious non-'80s clothes bother anyone else?

I finished season 1 and the clothes don't look '80s at all. They don't even bother dressing them in then-ridiculous clothes. Everything looks modern. No big puffy dresses at school dances? Nothing. Same with the hair. Carrie seems to be the only one in her school with "big hair".

I hate that! It's distracting and Carrie's hair is just not big enough for the 80s! Everything is too pretty!!

I dont even think of it as '80s. And to be honest people pretend the '80s were very different than today in terms of fashion. But the average teenager in the '80s could walk down the street today and I wouldnt think anything weird about it.

I would guess that there were teenagers in the 80s that didn't wear the leg warders or other. 80s outfits.

Reasonably affluent NY teenagers would be more into/able to afford whatever was considered 'fashionable' though-they're not in rural Idaho...

'What is an Oprah?'-Teal'c.

Agreed. I keep forgetting the series is taking place in the 80's because of their wardrobe and make up/hair. >.>

It should bother me, but it really doesn't.

I thought big hair didn't start until later part of 1986 or 1987. I remember Demi Moore's big hairdo in St Elmo's Fire. Not everybody had big hairdo's. Olivia Newton John and Jamie Lee Curtis didn't have big hair in the early part of 80's.

It's called natural hair. If you never had naturally kinky curly hair, then you would never understand.

About the clothes, I think it's great they added modern flair to the 80s look. 80s clothes were sometimes hideous looking at best. It's nice it's not full blown 80s.

I think that Samantha has a pretty decent 80s look. I agree that most of the characters don't look like the 1985 fashion era. Most of the girls in 1985 were emulating the Madonna look from the "Like A Virgin" album. I also think that Walt and his boyfriend have a little of the 1980s look of that year. What's missing is the "Miami Vice" look for the guys as well as the hair cuts from then.

I came to the board to see if there was a thread about this. I always noticed it but especially the last episode. Molly Sims' character's hair looked too current.

At the very least, they could go to thrift stores and put together outfits like that. I don't know how many times I have seen clothes from H &M on the show.

If I was the costume designer for the show I would have so many fun with it. There are tons of movies and pictures that they could get inspiration from.

I think Maggie sometimes has an 80's look. I've seen her in acid washed jeans... Samantha too. But, Carrie, Donna, Larissa , the guys do not appear to be 1980's.. I also think they do not speak very 1980's... Sometimes, they make an accurate references, Teen Wolf, Rubix Cube, Corey Hart, etc.... But, overall they could work harder to achieve a more authentic 80's era... There are other period TV shows that pull it off...

Madmen captures the 1960's, with the clothing, language and behavior... Same with That 70's show

You should hear Thor speaking modern english in The Avengers...

I agree. The costume designer has said the clothes are supposed to be a modern interpretation of 80s clothes (I guess so fans can go out and buy them?). But I don't think he really tries very hard. He puts platform shoes on Carrie and no one wanted to wear platforms in 1985 because they were totally out-of-style (leftover from the 70s, a decade everyone wanted to forget). The boys either all look too current or 90s. Maggie is the only one who has a decent 80s wardrobe.

Not only is the look off but they really should have looked at Sarah Jessica Parker from the era: http://tvlistings.zap2it.com/tv/square-pegs/photo-gallery-detail/EP00003966/718885666
Looks nothing like Annasophia!
