Seriously?

Seriously? I guess this is one of the worst movies I ever watched before, what the hell are you trying to do ? you will write scenes whatever you like just to reach the end which is gonna be playing the play?? is this how should a real teacher reacts for who hurt her? is this how we admire a child like Jaeson ? is this reality or ever close to real? writer, whoever you are , you failed so hard !

Did you post your comment whilst drunk? You obviously haven't watched a lot of movies if you think this is bad, but then again, maybe you expect every movie to be a 100 million dollar blockbuster with cheesy one liners. As for having a crack at the writer, you should clean up your grammar first before throwing stones.

Movies are clearly subjective. Chances are, if you name some of your favorite movies, I'd dislike them. This movie was made with a cadence that appeals to more mature audiences. I loved it. Everyone's acting is very natural, the plot is quite credible and real. Wish there were more movies like this one.

@shanx24: I agree 100% with everything you said. I'm in my 60's and have seen at least a thousand movies. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I gave it an 8. I can't understand why it has such a low rating. It was better than anything else I saw in the last year -- except maybe for "Fury".

Since you're playing grammar Police, the above should read "every movie be a 100 million dollar blockbuster".

I completely agree..
What a waste of time.. I'm really disappointed specially by Julianne Moore's performance.. I really tried to find something good about this movie.. I seriously didn't find anything.

abood-junaidy, you "failed so hard" to write a coherent meaningful opinion about The English Teacher. I understand you don't speak "the english" very well, but you could at least spell the name "Jason" right, right? They didn't write scenes that were random just to get to the play. The story was about a play, so of course the climax will be the actual play. Why do you think "Jason" is a child? He's in his 20's and why are we to admire him? It's a movie but I could see something like this happening in "reality." By the way you should stop using "Americanisms" to sound cool, if you're going to butcher them. No-one says "Failed so hard."

Do you look like a penis or just act like one?

Well, there are movies far worse than this in terms of boredness (believe me, i watched hundreds of similar movies).

In terms of reality... yeah . Well, that is what movies are. BTW, American movies that are based on real events are the best :).

The OP might not be a native English speaker, but I understand his sentiment about this movie and I agree... the writing here is poor and disjointed. With good writing, the characters should drive the plot, but in this movie the plot drives the characters to do things that are completely out of character.

The actor who plays Jason has no charm, but perhaps it's the poor writing to blame. Miss Sinclair pulls his play out of obscurity, after he had completely given up on it, and as appreciation he first sleeps with her and then inextricably turns on her. The bizarre thing is that Miss Sinclair is vilified by the students and fired on the spot for "allegedly" (with no actual proof) sleeping with Jason, a recent college grad, an adult. It's portrayed as if she slept with a high school student, which Jason most certainly was not. Instead, it is hinted that Jason has "something" going on with one of the students, the lead actress, which would be truly be wrong as he is an adult and she is a minor. But the writer never lets logic stand in his way. Why would the entire student body turn against Miss Sinclair? Because of some video snippet that shows nothing except Jason (who, again, is NOT a high school student but for purposes of the plot is treated like one) making some vague statement about bending Miss Sinclair over a desk. Please. This is a movie in need of a re-write. Too bad, because the actors here deserved better.

Well put! I agree with both of you :)

Don't get me wrong, since I haven't seen the movie: I came here to evaluate whether it's worth seeing or not...
The thing is that when you criticize something you shouldn't do it in broken English if you want your statement to be credible.
Otherwise people reading your post will think that probably you didn't even get the lines and that the reason you disliked the movie was due to the fact that you simply didn't get it...
This is friendly advice and I don't want to start any debate about whether the movie is good or not, since as they put it in French "les goƻts et les couleurs"... meaning the tastes and the colors are subjective matters.
Best luck!

Jason's a hack, Halle's a brat and the whole film revolves about Linda's need to outgrow her books and get a life. There is no moral. You aren't supposed to "admire" any of them; every single character in the film (but Jason's father, I guess) is deeply flawed and could use a few dents in their outsized egos.

As for the school turning on Linda... I don't know where you live but, unfortunately, that's exactly what any female in any position of power must face when her sexuality is exposed (by having sex with an ex stundent or just showing up at school with a skirt too short). It doesn't have anything to do with how much well liked she is or what have you, she would still be getting flack even if her sex partner had been another teacher. That's just the way it work for us.

I actually enjoyed the film. The acting was top notch, Julianne Moore and Greg Kinnear just owned every scene they got, and I am actually depressed because the soundtrack is nowhere to be found (I NEEDED IT IN MY LIFE, DAMMIT!). Ahem. I don't get the hate.

The movie was neither bad enough to hate nor good enough for its awesome cast. Kind of disjointed, as another poster said, and rushed...

When a film is like 90 mins long, there really is no time to waste on all the digressions and complications The English Teacher indulged in.

Stop! Manners time.

The movie was indeed somewhat disjointed, with a number of implausibilities, and did have an excellent cast, all of whom pleased me, anyway. I've been a fan of Julianne Moore since first seeing her in UNCLE VANYA ON 42nd STREET (well, I must have seen her before that, in SHORT CUTS, but UNCLE VANYA is where she first really made a big impression, just dazzling me with her particular beauty and serenity). But in ENGLISH TEACHER, I was most excited to see Norbert Leo Butz (as the vice-principle), who has been so truly electrifying on stage, and who I want to have a bigger career. Nathan Lane is a great favorite as well, and I'm always glad to see Greg Kinnear, when in a good role; he was quite charming in this. Really, I quite enjoyed the entire cast, and the story, even with all the movie's little flaws. It's not a hugely ambitious movie, but succeeds on its modest terms, for me.

Multiplex: 100+ shows a day, NONE worth watching. John Sayles' latest: NO distribution. SAD.
