Photographic Memory at Sheffield Doc/Fest

I watched this film at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, and I was so happy it won the Youth Jury Award. Out of all the films that won awards in the festival, this one was the most worthy, in my opinion. And I was especially happy to see the young people make this decision.

To put it shortly, it's a very honest and engaging film, and I really wish for it to succeed in other festivals too.

Can I have what youre smoking please?? This film had no redeeming qualitys; not one likeable character (the son especially was a materialistic jerk with no personality, ambitions or even a job), the narrator/director's voice almost put me to sleep... and I especially was baffled when towards the end Voice says he is "still married" back in the States. So why did he even decide to set out and find his brief trist with an indifferent French girl from decades ago anyway? Pointless film.

Just sayin'...

If you approach this docu as part slice of life film regarding his current relationship with his son and part nostalgic trip back to France where he spent part of his youth and expect nothing more, you won't come away disappointed. It was an ok docu. Not particularly engaging, interesting or entertaining. You don't particularly care for the dad and you really don't care for his son at all. In fact, watching his son slowly waste away his life and youth & the dad's ineptitude to stop it gets rather tedious and depressing to watch. Perhaps, that is the point of the docu? Watching a slow train wreck. Anyway that said, I've seen worse.
