question about death of the wife

What exactly happened to the wife? If there was any explanation of who killed her or why, I somehow completely missed it.

Thanks to anyone who can clear up my confusion....

I believe the Baron ordered his thugs to do it as revenge for her speaking to the Princess, and as a warning to Kohlhaas to stop suing him. At the end of the film the Governor tells Kohlhaas that the Baron received a two year prison sentence for what happened to her.

This isn't a spoiler as his wife's fatal injuries are mentioned in the summary of the film... I actually had the same question...
