I missed something...
Either the story jumped, or I missed something. After losing her legs, Stephanie calls Ali... then, he comes over....then he's suddenly her caretaker, essentially.
"Engineroom! Where the hell is my drink?"

You missed nothing. It's called contrived (bad) writing.
shareHe didn't seem at all like a caretaker to me, but rather a compassionate friend.
He did not spend a lot of time at her home and she had homecare assistants provided by insurance, she said. He only helped her when it came to carrying her into and out of the water - not at all in a paid companion sort of way.
