What'd he steal from store?

Dad was in store where there were cameras, he reaches down, grabs something, then runs out of the store, being chased by store personnel.

I don't know what he took. Soon after the son is playing with a small car I think it was. But that just looked to be too small a thing for him to steal from a store selling nice cameras.

What'd he steal? And why wasn't it shown more clearly?

I think it was the mans wallet. The next scene shows them on the beach and Sam has a kids meal box on his head and he's playing with the toy car from the meal. So after he stole the wallet they bought food. That's what I thought anyhow.

a camera

There was a deleted scene in the Blu-ray disc,
but we can't make out what he stole by just
watching the film. (I also thought that he took
someone's wallet.)

It was definitely a camera. He reached in the case when the storeclerk unlocked it. I assume he sold the camera (or traded it) for the McDonald's happy meal that we see the kid playing with the empty box on his head and the little toy car.

In the deleted scene, we can see that he stole the camera and then sold it, but we can also see him with the motorcycle that his brother-in-law gave to him, so he was already living with his sister at the time, he wasn't homeless anymore. But in the final cut, he stole the camera to feed him and his son.

Thanks Polly_Kat. Wow. The placement/timing of the scene makes all the difference in who I think the character is.

Although, it really doesn't change who he is because like most guys that have repeated issues with being in trouble, they seek out quick money; hence his falling in with the security guy doing the illegal spying.
