Had to root for someone whose only purpose left in life is to get revenge for the killing of his dog.

I don't think you got the subtext. After he couldn't do the thing he was supposed to do for the guys from Eddie's, THEY said he owed them money. That's not the same as HE owed them money. He was leaving town because they were going to get him. It's clear from the situation that these people were scumbags. When they killed Jolly that was the end of them. You'd have to have a dog you were close to. I've thought myself if someone killed my dog that would be it for them. I'd kill them.
