Is This A 'Marketing Jesus' Movie?

The trailer makes it look that way....

For one thing, most of those films address evil spirits *other* than the chief architect of your faith. Exorcist, for instance, is about Pazuzu, a Mesopotamian/Babylonian deity who predates the Christian Satan by some centuries.

Even if we attribute all evil deities to a myopic, Christian view, evil LOSES in those films. Clearly the Lord of Darkness needs to get some new promoters if he keeps getting defeated time after time.

But thank you for answering the question, and acknowledging that this IS a film marketing your religion. And please extend my thanks to your co-religionists that you're now using film instead of theft, rape, torture and murder to spread your faith, as was the case for about 1500 years.

People always try to demonize Christians. Many Atheists say they're anti-religion, yet you don't see them say hateful comments about Judaism, Hinduism, Muslims, or Buddhism as often as you see them say hateful comments about Christianity

You don't see hateful comments about Judaism, Hinduism, Muslims, or Buddhism? Are you new to the interweb? ;-)

P.S. Do you feel anything hateful has been said in this thread, or are you referring to comments about other movies? I don't have anything against Christians or Christian-themed movies, but I do have a problem with a Christian company producing a Christian-themed movie, but hiding that fact in an attempt to lure in non-Christians to promite their message and/or faith. That to me is lying. And some believe that thou shalt not lie. :-)

reply

Thou Shalt Not Lie - I believe you are attempting to quote Exodus 20:16 (or Deut 5:20) where the Ten Commandments are listed. This is actually incorrect. The commandment is actually Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

I believe you would rather quote Proverbs 12:22 - Lying lips are abomination to the LORD. Or one of many others about lying.

If you are going to try to quote the Bible to use it against Christians, at least quote it properly as Satan did in Matthew 4.

reply

I did not quote the bible.

I am not trying to do anything against Christians.

I'm just saying...say what you mean and mean what you say.

My family (wife and I) have been going to this one church for about 10 years now. When I started going there, I did not trust what they were about because of how I felt about religion at the time.

To this day, I am still a bit perplexed, but we kept going back. As I listened to different people, my thinking changed. I related to others better, including my wife! Before long, I knew this was the kind of journey for me.

The discovery did not end there... I have learned it is better to follow Jesus; instead of depending on me.

Oh, and my thanks to IMDB for this chance to share... this is kinda exciting to me! (By the way, the book on Homerun is excellent too)

Yes, it is.

Actually, all those horror movies like The Omen, The Exorcist, etc. are the best recruitment tools fundamentalist Christians have ever had, since they get some people to buy into all that supernatural hoodoo. Then fundamentalists step in and say, you'd better get Jesus or this will happen to YOU, and Bingo! More fundamentalists.

And yes, there are millions of rational Christians that find all that supernatural nonsense as ridiculous as atheists do.

reply

The simplest answer for you is yes. This is a Christian movie.

Given a look at their website (homerunthemovie.com), I don't think they are trying to hide it.

It is a Christian film, but it is more about the actual program of Celebrate Recovery, what it stands for, and the process of emotional healing people in the program go through.

I don't watch Christian movies, as I usually find them terribly acted and cheaply made, but this one touched me profoundly.

I had that experience with it, however, because I DO attend Celebrate Recovery twice a week, and it has saved my life, and I saw the film with my CR family in theaters when it came out and was able to recognize and relate to the characters stories from my own experiences in the program.

I hope, instead of a long drawn out, angry, judgmental, dogmatic "us against them" on either side rant, this answered your question. :)

Thank you, yes. Most of the answers here have been really great, especially considering how testy I was when I started this thread. (oops...) I liked your post better than the imdb.com storyline entry for this movie. You made me watch the trailer again to see if I should give this movie another chance. :-)

I've been watching some independent movies from the 80's and I'm surprised by how awful they look. Or maybe I just have an old, bad copy of the movie. Hopefully now with technology being so much better, smaller movies will get better and better. As for the acting, well if you add people like Vivica A. Fox to your cast, that's certainly a step in the right direction. :-D

You make it sound like all Christians are the same. Some Christians in the public eye (I actually doubt they are truly Christians, but say they are because it benefits them in one way or another) can do hurtful things, but I have Christians in my family and as friends who I see truly living a "Christ-like" life in the loving actions they take. To paint such a large group with one brush undermines any point you are trying to make.
