The Ending and Radiation - Serious Spoilers

I wouldn't have included the very final shot of the alien squid, I think it made the movie seem immediately silly.

They should have ended with the tentacles in the ship - that shot was enough of an indication of what was below the ice. Then the movie could have continued as it did (but kept some dignity), or better yet have announced a return trip to Europa to find out more about this unknown life form.

Also, was the radiation being emitted by the life beneath ice?

When probing beneath the ice, they say that radiation from Jupiter would be blocked by the ice, and that the radiation affecting the probe was being emitted from below the target zone. The effects of radiation are also always a factor whenever the characters encounter the bio-luminescence, but no character ever acknowledged this connection as far as I can recall.

Made me wonder if the aliens were using a nuclear sub. And... maybe they were.

I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler.

I agree with your first sentence. The movie would have been better if the Matrix squid had not shown up on Europa.

What's so "immediately silly" about an aquatic creature like an octopus/squid showing up in an aquatic environment?

Would you have preferred a polar bear or a seal? A Europan Eskimo, maybe?

I thought it was both cool, and creepy. Such cephalopods really unnerve me.

And the fact that it took out the landing craft and its crew reminded me of the hubris of the project for daring to put human lives at risk prematurely, rather than using more unmanned probes.

We can't possibly drill into the ice with a robot. We need to send a bunch of precious human beings out there. After all, what's the worse they could encounter: a few little microbes? Psh!

I think they had only one probe. That was silly I admit

Yeah it was not organic
