Pretty good series

I initially began watching this last year but abruptly stopped at the second (or third?) episode. I [daftly] decided that the confusion of trying to keep the Kiritsugu/Tokiomi/Kirei stories straight was too much and it became more of a chore for me to watch.

Months later, I revisited Fate/Zero, and after the fifth (I think) episode, I was hooked. I found myself really enjoying the premise, the characters (including some of their legendary/historical components), and the action. After every episode, I only wanted more. Not saying that all questions you may have will be answered, but it's definitely enjoyable and entertaining--and some parts do tug at the heartstrings.

I'd never seen Fate/stay night so I have actually started watching that.

Yeah it is a really good series, at least so far. I just started watching it the other day and I'm about half way through. I think I'm on episode 15 or so. The story definitely isn't this show's strongest suit. It's mostly about the characters and the action scenes. I am really impressed with the production value on this one.

Anyway, since you mentioned that you started watching Stay Night I wanted to ask you about that. Like you, I skipped right into Fate/Zero. But I heard that Stay Night is nowhere near as good so I'm afraid that I'm going to finish the awesomeness of Zero and then face disappointment with Stay Night. So what was your impression of the original?

I've also heard that there is a remake of Stay Night in the works...

reply

Right--I really think the characters and action scenes made up for it (for me anyway) by the time I was done. There's definitely room to improve the story aspect, though...maybe the new Fate/stay night will help on some level.

As for the original F/sn, I actually enjoyed it. You've heard correctly; it was definitely not as good as F/Z (certain things aren't elaborated on enough and it feels like even more is missing from the story), but I started to eventually connect with the characters of F/sn--mainly Shirou (who can be a bit annoying at first), Saber, and Rin.

I know the remake is coming out this fall, but if you find that you can stand to watch the original after several few episodes, please do. In my opinion, the last few episodes are probably the best of the series. I also want to check out the specials (the Unlimited Blade Works film and Fate/kaleid liner, although the latter is more of a side story for Illya) to see if I can get any more substance.

I'm looking forward to comparing the two, actually...but the general consensus is that F/sn...kinda sucks.

How about the Stay Night visual novel? Have you played that? I hear that it's vastly superior to the anime adaptation.

reply

I so so so badly want to play that because I've heard nothing but great things!! My laptop died several months back and I haven't replaced it...I was just about to pop my visual novel cherry when it died, too. Ah, well.

I'm a VN virgin too. I think I'll check that out before watching the FN anime.

Currently downloading the VN! Looking forward to diving in.

Lucky!! Enjoy.

Mixing those three up was the reason for many rewindings for me. Kirei and Tokiomi are almost indistinguishable, and 'Kiritsugu' (whose childhood nickname was 'Kerry') sounds a bit like 'Kirei'. Then you have to try and keep straight who has the assassin, vs who has the archer... And even at the end of the series I felt like the characters of Tokiomi and Kirei were not very fleshed out - I still don't see much difference between them.

Welp, glad it wasn't just me. I could barely differentiate the three at first but it got a little easier the more I got into the story. Still, I'm glad I gave it a chance and am also looking forward to the stay night revamp.
