Well, I believe the Dad invariably led the Devil to his family while he was looking for them.
I thought the ending was pretty awesome imo.
It really wasn't.
It was a copout.
A few more second could have given us SOME sort of ending, the devil flies off with the dad leaving the family behind, or just plain out killed them all.

And come on. What was the idiot daughter still doing pleading with the dad not to shoot. When she clearly saw the monster behind her. And instead of ducking down with the rest of the family, prompting the officers to mistake her dad for trying to gun her down.
Retarded.
Seems to me like the plan was for the devil to not be real and have it be all about the dad going crazy... and then someone high up came in and decided that the beast really needed to be there.
