I really enjoyed this film and am quite surprised by the general attitude of reviewers. I thought the 80's synth soundtrack was superb and really created good feeling throughout.

From a basic punters perspective I would say that the filming was really enjoyable especially the moody lighting. I also liked the retro-futuristic (:P) image that this film created.

Based on this short description of the points I found fine about this film could anyone recommend anything in a similar vein?

I haven't watched this film yet, but from the description / synopsys, I think a safe bet would be Predestination.

There was a BBC play called the flipside of dominic hyde

I enjoyed that a lot it was made in the 90's

Predestination, Triangle, Timecrimes, +1 (Plus One) and Coherence are in similar vein and all good movies. Primer is in a similar vein and is over-hyped and over-pretentious.

Well obviously the soundtrack and much of the retrofuturistic scenes and lighting are 100% inspired if not just blatantly ripped off from Blade Runner. But then that one is such a classic that a lot of sci-fi films since then have tried to copy it.
