I did not understand the end of the movie

Would someone mind telling me what happened the last 5 minutes.

When he went through the wormhole, he notices the notebook in his pocket and read it. He met Abby and the movie ends.

What happened?
They were not looking for solutions and just laughed.
Lest he reconciled with his death and just wants to see Abby?

Dear Redice-1

Jim Beale (character name of the main scientist who was suffering from twin time paradox fatality) thought that by going back to the past or the immediate present of the reality that he was trying to correct by resetting everything.

However as he was in another parallel reality with his fellow scientists, Klaus Misner (Micheal Ironside) and Abby. He was unable to correct what he thought that he had done. So as whichever dimension or reality he shifted/travelled or phased to via the wormhole machine - he would only have a very short lifespan as he was an anomaly or abnormality in the fabric of time relative to the dimension or reality that he gone to. (cf Back to the Future Part 1 where Marty McFly was fading away at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.)

When you watch the last five or ten minutes of the film, you'll notice that Jim did not notice that the bartender was different from the other reality that he had just travelled from. Hence showing that he was in another alternate reality that was very similar to the one he had been in.

So when Jim uses the wormhole machine to jump back in time, he wasn't really going back in time to that original reality, he was going to another alternate parallel reality/universe that co-exists within the wormhole that he had created.

The mistake that Jim made was thinking that the wormhole (cf Einsteinā€“Rosen bridge) worked like a mirror (you are the reflection then back to normal when you jump back)or even like a two way door. But in actual fact the wormhole did not return back to the original event or reality but to multiple, countless, infinite realities that increased with every experimental journey.

Apologies for the somewhat long-winded explanation. Hope that helps.

Best Regards.

He arrived at a new parallel universe where its John was already dead. He can likely survive here without the anomaly side effects. The up to date notebook explains he isn't back where he started like he thought, nor is he even the original John.. he is the second parallel. Upon realising his good fortune to be there because he wont die and he has a new abby, he is happy. The new abby has never met him and he is probably telling her who he is... The original john is however dead in the first parallel... abby went to check (after the second jump)at the grand hotel thinking it would change time and he wouldnt die, but he did. We still dont know what happened to the original timeline he left behind. Nor do we know about the other dead john that was at the other hotel.

If the Jim of the 'final' universe was already dead - who built the endpoint the new Jim arrived through?

reply

I don't think it worked like how they thought it did. You didn't need two receivers. One opened a hole to another parallel dimension instead of corresponding to the same dimension's past like they had thought.

reply

^^^ This. Also, not all the parallel universes had to have only subtle differences. Let's say they could guarantee the physical coordinates are approximately the same for the wormhole to connect to, but the lab in one universe might be at a different location, or the events when everyone is at the lab for the experiments could happen earlier or later in time... or not at all (as may be the case in the final universe from the last 5 mins).

So every time he went through the wormhole, he landed in another universe, which means we have seen like 3-4 different universes or did he move to another universe only once and from there went back in time a few times in that same wrong parallel universe?

So basically, there are 2 phenomenons, time travel AND jump into another universe? I have no idea what's happening.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefsī²

Great question.

And if every universe is different, why did everything happen as if he was in the same universe the first time we saw him go back? His older self saw his younger self do all the same things and reacted to things caused by his older self.

This is crazy stuff lol, so if the final universe in version of Jim was dead and he hasn't built the or achieved the working version of the time machine are you saying a parallel universe of Jim would not be able to travel to said universe?

This is a complex and deep movie and almost impossible to fully "get" in one watch through and to be honest none of the answers above are correct or at least not fully or completely correct. Not only a complex story but there are layers to the story. I'll give what is actually a brief explanation even though it might not seem brief.

First there is time traveling but when Jim travels back in time he lands in a parallel universe as well. He doesn't notice at first or second or third.. "wait what?!" Yeah that's right. See these parallel universes can slightly or massively be different. And this story isn't about one man it's about many versions of the same man. You think the story starts with Jim you meet in the beginning of the movie Jim prime as they called him but he isn't Jim Prime he is at least Jim 3 and could actually be Jim 127 in fact Jim prime was actually John (who was a Jim but in his universe was names John not Jim. Same guy just his parents decided that they liked that name and a example of how small the differences between the parallel universes are)

We know this because in the beginning of the movie who we thought was Jim prime first meets Abby she had actually just met another Jim but at that time we thought it was the first Jim but from the future but it turns out it was another Jim maybe even the Jim that Jim prime found his body but it is possible that again it could be any Jim from a infinite amount of jims.

So our original Jim dies and his Abby 2 realizes the sad reality that her Jim has died before the other Jim stepped through the worm hole and was to late.

Now the surviving Jim lands in the past but this one is much more different from his universe as there is no Abby or anyone waiting for him which gives him the time to ponder "wtf" but causes him to check his pockets and find the journal from Abby and after reading it he realizes that he is in a different universe and tracks down this Abby to find out his twin names John is dead which actually means he won't die here from as Abby called it time cancer lol (temporal paradox syndrome) as two jims don't occupy the same universe at the same time.

Now after you wrap your head around that I'll explain the next layer. Notice after our Jim when back in time half way through the movie, at certain times the sound would mess up and it would be like deja vu and Abby as well was subtly different from the "first time" well that pertains to the actual title of the movie "Synchronicity" something no one gets because few people actually know the meaning of the word. I will let you look it up but long story short John prime was ment to be with Abby but he died before they met and the universe has been working to fix this mistake and jims/johns have been dying and repeating over and over until Jim finally makes it to John primes Abby, Abby prime and the loop closes.

So this is a sci-fi but it is also a love story about two people meant to be together and all because of Synchronicity. It is actually a very brilliant movie but unfortunately to complex for most people who don't have a working knowledge of what the term Synchronicity AND multiverse theory (parallel universe) which is most people.

I didn't know the term Synchronicity, and only faintly knew about multi universe, however your explanation clicks with me. Makes me appreciate this movie a lot more, and warrants a second viewing.

My understanding of this was slightly different. I thought that the machine could send him back to either the same universe or an alternate universe. So when he found out he was actually the third guy and not the second he realises it is an alternate universe he has dived back into.

This is actually good since with only 2 he would have been caught in a time loop so the third guy is like a breakout. He can keep updating the journal, keep updating Abby, until eventually they know enough to get to the ending.

disclaimer: I've only watched it once, and I was eating at the time. I will watch again at some point.
