Dear Redice-1
Jim Beale (character name of the main scientist who was suffering from twin time paradox fatality) thought that by going back to the past or the immediate present of the reality that he was trying to correct by resetting everything.
However as he was in another parallel reality with his fellow scientists, Klaus Misner (Micheal Ironside) and Abby. He was unable to correct what he thought that he had done. So as whichever dimension or reality he shifted/travelled or phased to via the wormhole machine - he would only have a very short lifespan as he was an anomaly or abnormality in the fabric of time relative to the dimension or reality that he gone to. (cf Back to the Future Part 1 where Marty McFly was fading away at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.)
When you watch the last five or ten minutes of the film, you'll notice that Jim did not notice that the bartender was different from the other reality that he had just travelled from. Hence showing that he was in another alternate reality that was very similar to the one he had been in.
So when Jim uses the wormhole machine to jump back in time, he wasn't really going back in time to that original reality, he was going to another alternate parallel reality/universe that co-exists within the wormhole that he had created.
The mistake that Jim made was thinking that the wormhole (cf EinsteināRosen bridge) worked like a mirror (you are the reflection then back to normal when you jump back)or even like a two way door. But in actual fact the wormhole did not return back to the original event or reality but to multiple, countless, infinite realities that increased with every experimental journey.
Apologies for the somewhat long-winded explanation. Hope that helps.
Best Regards.
