This movie pissed me off. *RANT*

It's extremely unrealistic and at the same time tries to sell itself as something it is not. The lead character constantly seeks advice from people around him about love, relationships and such even though (I mean HELLOOO!!) he is like a 40+ year old man. Have you really not figured out SOME stuff out by now? He is also extremely emotionally unavailable, he is predictable, boring, not funny, and offers no intimacy in any way (and i don't just mean sexual). How many women would really go on even a second date with a guy like him? I know I wouldn't. So yeah, I dont like the fact that emotionally stunted and just overall weird man like that get to be praised for being "old fashioned" and "decent" as though thats a relevant quality to have in this century. I understand abstinence but this was something abnormal.

You know what, I would go on a second date and even marry this type of man. He had a past, learned better then changed his life and did better! He showed love and respect and acted as a Godly man. Though faith was not preached, he lives the standards of the Bible. I respect that and any man that dare man up and attempt it for himself. When relationships are built the right way, they last!

Does that mean if he rapes a virgin he will pay her father 30 sheckles and then marry her and never divorce her?
Does that mean if he goes to war he will bring home a virgin, shave her head and then marry her six months later?
Does that mean if his married brother dies without a child he will sleep with his sister-in-law and not pull out?
Does that mean if his wife can't get pregnant he will have sex with her maid to have a child?

Actually that's the only type of man I would marry!

reply

I agree with dhenry...that's the kind of guy I'm looking for!

I actually work in psych and am qualified to say the character is not psychopathic, however your rage over a wholesome character leads me to thing that you could be. It also leads me to believe that you are an atheist who loves attacking Christians therefore conversation over.
Yes, these men do exist and I thank God and pray for one like this. God knows I've had two like you!

Being a psychologist is not a free pass to be right. I"ve been married to a catholic psychiatrist and she believed that her way was the best way. So everybody had to live up to her standards. If you didn't, then she just blocked those people out of her life, including family. But on the outside, she looked like the nicest woman. You would think a psychologist would know better, but they are still human, with their faults.

Not saying that the main male character was completely psychopathic, he has problems with putting himself in other people's position. He definitely has issue and if I was that girl, I would have taken the jar and drive on! He is bound to make her unhappy, as she will have to live according to his believes and rules. People don't change and you should not want to change them. If you feel the need to change them, you are with the wrong person. You have to admire people for who they are. And he did not admire her for who she is, he was self obsessed and self centric.

Reread the post you are replying to, she didn't say that she was a psychologist, said they worked in psych, she is maybe a psych nurse but I think she would have said that, more likely an aid or clerk either in mental health facility or for an outpatient clinic and thinks she knows all about psychology.

Receptionist. Or maybe a "counselor" at one of those, ahem, "Crisis Pregnancy Centers" where unqualified zealots terrify pregnant women with lies about breast cancer.

I love it when Christians play the victim stance just because someone didn't like their faith-based movie. Now, I myself am religious, but i found this film ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!!! He says that he doesn't trust himself to be alone with a woman because he's afraid he won't be able to resist sex with her. Um... That's the kind of thing a rapist would say!

^ THIS! A man who can't even control his own sexual urges doesn't deserve to be called a Christian. That's pretty much what Frollo was like in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Now, my sexual urges were not brought up at all. You don't know me. And, also, judging me? THAT sure as hell doesn't seem very christian...

reply

Actually, I was referring to Clay's character, not you.

Oh, I'm sorry. I misunderstood. I retract my previous statement.

Brad Jones aka The Cinema Snob touched on this last point several times:

"Defenders called this movie 'The opposite to 50 Shades', but they're actually very similar. They both feature an emotionally abusive male lead who seems moments away from committing rape at all times."

"Saying 'I refuse to be alone in a room with a woman who isn't my wife' isn't cute; it's the kind of thing a pedophile says when he can't trust himself to be alone with kids."

"I totally get why Trish thought Clay Walsh was gay; I did too, especially after watching several of Rik Swartzwelder's interviews. I mean, seriously, he wrote himself into a romance film in which he refuses to touch a woman!"

reply

Thanks to you, I've now found my new favorite thing on the internet.

"Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and *beep* OFF WITH THAT QUESTION!"

reply

Oh my God, this movie mad me upset too. There is a line between 50 Shades of Grey and Old Fashioned.

This guy seemed to have so many issues. And what landlord is unable to go inside one of his apartments to fix a broken appliance?

And seriously, the girl had issues too. She kept on breaking things so he can come over?

reply

This movie and Fifty Shades were both terrible, but for different reasons.
