The ending *SPOILERS*

So, I guess I wasn't paying really close attention....

Rutger Hauer's character is the only "real" person in the game? The other's were just computer generated, or whatever? So he was going to win from the beginning, but take the ten hours to do so, and then he is conned out of the extra billions of dollars and somehow he believes he is young again? When we see his old self in the car at the end leaving the place, does that mean he then realizes that he is just his old self?

Thanks in advance.

yes. you are correct. After the con artists steal the guy's money and before the guy leaves the office you see them pick up an object from the floor that is circular. I believe that that is a holographic projector of some sort

Thank you belisle. I'm still wondering if he knew at the end. The price went from 5 million to 368 million (or so, don't quote me on that). That is a HUGE difference. I mean, think about 5 thousand to 368 thousand.....

Just asking. I like the movie, it was fun. Kept me guessing.

reply

Like I've typed, I like this movie for what it is. Fun.

I'm still wondering about the ending and Rutger Hauer's character. Did he know he got scammed? And if he did, why didn't he turn around and go Schwarzenegger on them?

reply

the con artists were leaving town. it looked like they were leaving quick. he wouldn't have caught up with them

I wasn't expecting much from this movie but I liked it more than I thought, I was entertained :)

One thing that got me thinking though was at the end he should have known or maybe he did know he was still in his old body as soon as he had the retina scan, because that would have indicated straight away he was still himself. If he had transferred into the other body the retina scan wouldn't have worked.

Maybe he was still dreaming of kissing that cute English gal before he stabbed her in her neck. Interesting movie, I liked it too. Maybe the ending needed a bit, just a tiny bit more of a clue as to what was really going on with him at the end. Either way, it was an entertaining watch.

1) Was he the only person in the game?
I'm thinking no.
If he is the only real one, why do the others act when he is not around? They clearly had conversations (some even had sex) and such without him.

So what would be the point in that?

Also, why would they bring the girl back to kill her again?
They wouldn't need it if it's just in his head.

So I'm thinking that the others were real. Most likely, the whole scenario was meant to get someone to want to have a young body so much, they'd pay them asap without realizing the whole thing was just a "matrix" thing.

2) The way I understand it, the guy didn't know. There was a hint of something wrong when they used the eye scanner to transfer the money - how the bloody heck would that work if he is in another body? Since it's clearly a body he chose rather than himself being young, there is no way the scanner would work.

However, if he knew it was fake, why on earth did he bother pay them?
I think he didn't know. They basically gave him a "placebo" of sorts and let him full himself. Which is why they were packing everything and leaving the place asap.

Oh, and the device they took in the end? That's the eye scanner they used to transfer the funds.

That "gadget" marked "blue" is actually a USB microphone. Not sure what they were pretending it was, but it was the worst disguised prop ever. They didn't even cover up the brand name.

LOL!

I didn't even notice that...

Noticed some things:
1) The gadget on the floor at the end of the movie with label 'Blue' looked slightly smaller than the Retina scan gadget on the table at the beginning of the movie. Not sure what the gadget is but don't think it's the Retina scanner.

2) To make the con believable, at the end, they made the mirror in the facility and the mirror in the car show the reflection of the young man. These are what the character sees. We see an old man in the car is for the audience to see.

3) To help in the con, I think they intentionally pretend that there was a glitch, wake him up and 'motivate' him that he can remain young if he wins the game.

4) At the beginning, the guy sleeps in 4th seat but at the end he wakes up in the 3rd seat and sees a 'body' in the 4th seat that makes him believe that it is his old body. Not sure how they did the con but I'm guessing that they removed the first seat to make it look like he awaken from 3rd seat and may have got someone to pretend to be the body next to him.

5) They did research on their victims and seem to select rich people who may not have long to live. This might make them have stronger desire to be young and perhaps hopefully not have long to come after the cons when the victims discover the truth. The one in charge of the facility also verbally said a disclaimer that he wasn't sure how long he could maintain the effect of keeping the person young.

6) My question is why he didn't look at his hands at the end to see his old hands?
At the beginning and in the middle he kept looking at his hands.

7) Some flaws by the cons that didn't get discovered by the man:
i) The wrong room they stumbled upon had a picture of the dead Chinese man lying down position. It might have been a predicted prerecorded move or a previous game.

ii) They told him that he was the last player but when he selected from the 6 bodies, some of the characters were with him in the game. That means that they lied to him as those characters would have been chosen by other 9 players earlier than him.
