Doesn't make sense (spoilers)

There are so many enigmatic things in this tense thriller that add to the suspense but why would Josh, who worships nature almost religiously (replaces the nest, knows the doe is pregnant, grows food, hates industrialization) take a life? Although he is a terrible communicator, it just doesn't make sense that he would be able to strangle someone, much less a friend and a possible lover. Educate me!

Desperation and a messed-up mind, I suppose, given they had unintentionally killed somebody in their sabotage which made it a far more serious offence than it would otherwise have been and he might have feared she would reveal what happened. Also, as others have said here, there's a suggestion the other guy slept with and quite possibly impregnated her, so he might have felt betrayed.

I think it shows that no matter what our beliefs or convictions are as humans, we are still subject to our more primal instincts/emotions and at times they can overpower our more intellectual side. In this case I think Josh was overcome by fear of being caught and being locked up for a long time, and this fear overpowered him and drove him to do what he did.

She was going to rat them all out. It was kill or be killed. He had no choice.

You should consider reading Crime & Punishment by Dostoevsky for an example of a character committing a crime and then thoroughly unravelling through a mixture of guilt and the fear of being caught.

The things that Josh did towards the end of the movie are things that pre-bombing Josh would never have done; but that's kind of the point. ie the act of terrorism changed him forever.
