That's why I came here I'm lost. Wasn't thinking about him getting the job though that seemed like some sort of diversion plan to stall what he was really trying to do . Which seemed like stealing other people phones.

shareLike the "deer kick" scene, I think it was meant to show more hypocrisy on their part. They are taking drastic measures to fight things they themselves benefit from. If you watch the scene where Jesse Eisenberg drives away from the CSA Farm, the shot lingers on an electrical box, showing that the very place where he lived and worked in "harmony" with the land was actually supplied with electricity... produced from a hydroelectric dam, no doubt. Irony!
In other words, I don't think this was bad writing, if that's what you're implying.
Yeah, they cut away too soon. He caught that guy shoplifting (seen in the mirror) and the manager hired him on the spot. He then was able to steal items and embezzle money to help him commit his next crime. Also, he later caught a hot girl shoplifting (probably Kristin Stewart or somebody) and she became his accomplice.
