Any mention of the city where he went to school and started playing his first gigs?

Young spends a fair amount of time in the film following his brother around his hometown of Omemee in Ontario, where he grew up, which should answer the first half of your question; as to the second half, he did not mention. Apparently that is the town in north Ontario in "Helpless."

Winnipeg is not "the town in north Ontario", it is the capital and largest city in the Canadian province of Manitoba, which is what the OP was asking about. The city is widely associated with Neil Young and, if it wasn't even mentioned in the film, it seems truly odd.

It is not mentioned, but frankly the vast majority of this film is a concert film with very sporadic and brief interviews, if you even want to call it that. Neil Young does wear a Manitoba Moose cap throughout the film, though (not during the concert). In the special features he discusses, at some length, the film Heart of Gold, and the album Prairie Wind, which has many obvious references to Winnipeg and Manitoba.
