Wonderful film, but the Music Biz is worse.

I'm watching this now on Showtime. An wonderful film & important story, hard to believe it's not better known. It's also an important story about ALL artists, not just filmmakers.

- but let me tell you, the music biz is faaaaaar worse:

Imagine the same exact story, except with some great musician / performer. He'll struggle the same way, giving up everything for years. - but at the end, if his project happens and by some miracle it becomes a huge hit.....

He still doesn't get paid.

And oh yeah: If he doesn't make it by the time he's 30, it's time to apply for a job at Walmart.

-------

Filmmakers have it EASY.

The same thing is true of filmmakers, except for the 30 part. It's still incredibly difficult to make it as a filmmaker after 30 though. Plus musicians can be studio musicians or teachers if they don't get a hit.

Not saying the music industry ISN'T worse, just saying filmmakers do not have it easy.

I think any kind of artist who’s been through a really tough struggle in pursuit of their art or artistic occupation can find meaning in this film. I don’t aspire to act or direct, but this movie really hit me hard. I could relate to the pain and frustration more than any inspiring elements in this film. In fact, I could argue that this movie isn’t inspiring at all— but that’s not to say that it isn’t an important or a great documentary, because it’s both.

When I saw the movie Inside Llewelyn Davis in the theater, that was a genuinely traumatic experience. In some kind of way it resonated with me, and I’m not a musician of any kind. It must have been an almost subconscious emotional connection. While this movie didn’t take as big a toll, it really left an imprint. I watch lots and lots of documentaries, and I’m rarely grabbed like this, so it connected in a personal way. I’m reallly glad I tripped over this film.

Also, I don’t follow celebrities at all, ever, but I just looked to see if Rachel and Daniel were still married, and they are. Thank goodness. Haha
