"Sleep on the couch" ?

I'm not american, and I don't get this concept. Through the movie the guy just drifts and sleeps at random people homes. It makes me wonder how can a someone ask out of the blue to sleep on someones couch ?(Hey Al Cody, we just met, can I stay at your place for some time?) If i asked someone where i live they would probably start laughing instantly. Was this the thing in the past?

Sorry, not really a serious thread, just curiosity.

It's still a thing. It's pretty specific to certain subgroups, like broke musicians. Llewyn could ask Al even though they just met because they both knew Jim - they were both part of a community where crashing on a couch isn't uncommon, so the request doesn't seem that outrageous.
