True Coen bros fans, how does this rank among their films?

Is it them on top form? Or were you disappointed? I'm just curious.

reply

I think they did great with this movie. This for me is the best Coen brothers movie of the 2000s after No country for old men. Though True grit is also a great movie, this stands a little above it, I feel

Barton Fink should be in top 250

reply

I enjoyed it a lot but I consider it one of the pair's minor efforts. I'd probably rank there films something like...

Fargo
Miller's Crossing
The Big Lebowski
No Country for Old Men
The Man Who Wasn't There
Barton Fink
A Serious Man
True Grit
Inside Llewyn Davis
Blood Simple
Burn After Reading
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Ladykillers
Raising Arizona
The Hudsucker Proxy
Intolerable Cruelty

reply

I think it's a really solid film and pretty underrated. I love the structure, the cinematography, the performances, the music, and Llewyn as a character even if he's a jerk.

1. No Country for Old Men
2. Fargo
3. The Big Lebowski
4. O Brother Where Art Thou
5. Inside Llewyn Davis

reply

It's certainly underrated on imdb, the Metascore is exactly what I gave it, a 9/10. Between True Grit, this and the masterpiece that IS No Country For Old Men, I gotta say im pleased with what they've done recently. Every film they make puts their Catalog toe to toe with the best.

The Big Lebowski
Fargo
Raising Arizona
Blood Simple
Barton Fink
Millers Crossing
NCFOM
Inside Llewyn Davis
True Grit

... I mean, thats not in order, just a quick list to show their range over the last 30 years. Its amazing. Add in the few I forgot and their collection is right up there with Kubrick and Scorsese IMO

reply

ranking their movies top to bottom is a waste of time i think. i think it makes more sense to rank them by group.

top, near top, middle, near bottom, bottom.

i'd rank this near top.

it's also kind of hard to rank their films because alot of them intentionally leave in b elements and silly, risky stuff.

they don't really try to make towering skyscaper movies like 2001 or the Godfather.

i don't know if they have it in them to make a movie like billy wilder, kubrick, or even speilberg. not saying they don't, it's just not their style.

reply

They absolutely have their own style. They throw in a ton of Kubrick "Tributes" so to say but their filming style is 100% their own. They take risks, as you said, B elements can be seen all over the place. Their range is almost unmatched. I have my favorites but its almost impossible to compare Barton Fink and Fargo... Not because A is so much BETTER than B but because A is so much DIFFERENT than B.

All I know is I cant wait for Hail, Caesar and Bridge of Spies(I know they only wrote it but Spielberg looks like he's back on his game and that's a helluva combo)

reply

Yeah, this is top tier stuff for me.

I don't see one bit of Coen greatness in it, and I would rank it near the bottom. Here are my top five:

1. Raising Arizona
2. Miller's Crossing
3. Barton Fink
4. The Big Lebowski
5. Fargo

reply

It's definitely one of their Top 5 films, ahead of the curve conceptually, and I suspect it will be considered one of their classics in the years to come.

Thought-provoking, subtle, beautiful, melancholic, wry - simply an excellent, mature artwork by two of the greatest American directors.

reply

Originally I wouldn't even put this on my top 5, but after watching it quite a bit this week, my attitude has changed dramatically, and now its like this:

1.) Barton Fink
2.) Miller's Crossing
3.) The Hudsucker Proxy
4.) The Big Lebowski
5.) Inside Llewyn Davis
6.) True Grit
7.) Raising Arizona
8.) A Serious Man
9.) No Country For Old Men
10.) Fargo
11.) O Brother Where Art Thou
12.) The Ladykillers
13.) The Man Who Wasn't There
14.) Blood Simple
15.) Intolerable Cruelty
16.) Burn After Reading

reply

It's much more subtle than many of their films, so it's understandable that many people (including some Coen bros.fans) might think it's one of their lesser films on first viewing.

My top 5 of their's, in no particular order are:

Inside Llewyn Davis
No Country For Old Men
Fargo
Miller's Crossing
The Big Lebowski

reply

Hmmm somewhere in the middle still dann good tho!

reply

I kind of feel like it's O Brother Where Art Thou, meets No Country For Old Men.

It's a great musical, and it's really funny, but it's a black comedy and the tone is very melancholic.

I loved this film, and the soundtrack is superb. Liking this era of music probably helps, but I can't separate my love for the music and the movie, so I may be biased.
