5.7?? Really?

I haven't seen the movie, but most of the reviews I've seen have been positive. My question is: Why the low rating? Usually IMDb likes this kind of thing...

reply

I don't know, NYTimes gave it a good review and they're usually pretty snooty about low budget horror films...

reply

It also got a good review from the AV club (who I generally agree with) which made me excited because usually this type of movie is really bad, but a good one can be really fun. Hmm....

reply

No,usually, as in this case, IMDB underrates horror movies.

Must be too many Saw fans on IMDB. The Pact is quite good.

reply

I think most fans of this genre want very fast very frequent scares which must be the main purpose of the film. where as this with the murder mystery theme and longer pace is too much of a story for some.

reply

It's a good movie. Not great but certainly doesn't deserve to be rated any less than a 6 imo. I take IMDB ratings with a large pinch of salt anyway so no surprise really.

If i wanted all that cgi bullsh!t I'd have have gone home and stuck my dick in a nintendo.

I just looked at the rating after seeing this film for the first time and was absolutely stunned that it's so low. I simply don't know what people want from movies anymore. The Pact is original and tense, which is more than can be said for a lot of crap that rates higher.

Oh well, I gave it a 9, and that's all that matters to me.

It does effectively build a lot of tension, but it doesn't really go much of anywhere with it. It seesaws between being suspenseful and being boring. It's kind of a ghost story, kind of a serial killer flick, and suffers for not really making up it's mind in a coherent way. That's why the average rating is so low even though the cinematography and acting is solid... in the end, I'm not even all that sure where it was trying to go. It's too bad, because it did have the elements to be a very good movie with a little more tweaking and direction to the storyline.

5.7 or anything equivalent to ~60% is a fairly decent rating for any horror/supernatural movie. Lots of people - and critics - simply do not like the genre and it reflects in their ratings. Scifi/comics have become a bit more mainstream lately, so aren't penalized as heavily in aggregrate ratings.

Horror/supernatural movies always get widely polarized ratings because of several constant factors:
- People who aren't fans of the genre and simply don't like ghosts, supernatural elements, slashers, whatever, that watch the movie for some reason (usually with a fan) and hate it.
- Casual fans who are easily scared and wowed by a handful of spooky effects (call it the Paranormal Activity phenomenom if you like) will give a high rating
- Jaded fans who have watched so many movies in the genre that one really needs to stand out somehow to achieve a high rating
- Shock fans that aren't impressed with a horror movie unless it meets a certain standard of gore/shock/disturbingness

Fantastic analysis! A perfect horror movie for one person, is crap to another. If a horror movie gets in the 6-6.8 range it is proabaly pretty decent, per IMDB standards. Whereas a generic action, scifi, suspense thriller needs around 6.8-7.3 for me to agree it is good. Meaning: I don't let a lower rating on a horror film keep me from seeing it cause even the scariest ones hardly ever make it above a 7.

It's just nothing special. Despite what some IMDB reviews say, this movie is a pretty simple collection of the same old tropes we've seen over and over. It's put together in a competent way but doesn't offer anything new or unexpected or out-of-the-ordinary enough to be memorable or interesting enough to make any sort of impact on the viewer or the medium.

i watched it last night and i would give it an 8. and i have seen so many films like this, but this one was compentently done. Nice photography. Solid acting. Good music. Good story. it's difficult to be original these days, but any time you jump in your seat or have an ah-ha moment, then the film is getting into your psyche and messing with you, and that gives me enjoyment and satisfaction. every film will have a fault, but i'm willing to overlook it, for the overal goodness of the film. and this film was good.

do you know how difficult it is to shoot in a small closet, and they did a great job shooting that scene at the end. that is smart filmmaking.
