Is the movie too convenient or I just don't get it?

So the guy keeps getting squeezed by 3 major loan sharks, to the point of bodily harm or death and yet, each squeeze, he walks away in each and every scenario with more money and extended credit?

SPOILER ALERT!

Especially that scene in the bathtub where he was being drowned by the Korean mafia and all the dialogue for Mark Whalberg is just a reptition of, "Stake Me (100G I think)"; and it works?!

He has no joy in life. He is borderline suicidal and likes to waste money at casino's for the thrill of the feeling and being at the top of the world -- even if just for a second.

He isn't a gambler and doesn't have an addiction. He is simply pushing his life to the most extreme limit possible in his mind. That is, until he meets Roberta (who kind of shows him that life can still be enjoyed in other ways and to stop taking life so seriously).. Which then prompts him to win back the money and break even.
