I was distracted during the big reveal. What did the key open? And, if he's a locksmith, shouldn't he be able to open a lock, even without the key?

What did the key open?

Some safe of Godureaux's somewhere, apparently.
One wonders how Selznick was supposed to find the safe with the only other person who had known of its existence now being dead.

if he's a locksmith, shouldn't he be able to open a lock, even without the key?

Now there's the $54,000 question.

The last 4 bars of La Cinquette was the key... to the key. So, only a piano virtuoso could instruct the intricate mechanism inside the piano to release the normal key from inside.

If I recall correctly, the piano was well guarded...I don't think it would be that easy
