Too old?

Plummer is 83. Barrymore died when he was 60.

There's a good chance he looked 83 when he died.

I always take the line Anthony Hopkins looked very little like Richard Nixon, it didn't detract from the performance.

reply

Right, Duke. The actual age difference between Barrymore and Plummer doesn't matter much because Barrymore looked older than he was and Plummer looks younger than he is.

reply

No, I don't Plummer's too old. I thought he looked very believable, especially if you remember what Barrymore looked like in his final movie.

On the other hand, I'm sorry I never got to see Plummer play in the original production. I'd love to compare the two performances.

Chicago hosted the play "Barrymore" twice, once in pre-Broadway tryouts, and the other after it closed in New York. I saw the play pre-Broadway and it and Mr. Plummer were just terrific. There is quite a difference however between the play that I saw and the 2011 recorded version from the aspect of the script. I don't know whether this was the finalized script used for the Broadway run or was one written for this occasion.

Principally what I remember in the pre-Broadway "Barrymore" are numerous comparisons between John Barrymore and Shakespeare's Marc Antony and there were many quotations from the play. The recorded version seems to concentrate on the later, and sadder, Mr. Barrymore. In many ways I wish the earlier version of "Barrymore" was recorded.

That criticism aside, I'm glad that "Barrymore" was recorded for posterity. Mr. Plummer is a wonderful actor.
