IMDB user ratings?

I sm really perplexed by the user ratings for the movie. 39.3% have rated it a 10 and 8.8 percent have rated it a 1. I haven't seen it but I've seen a lot of individual reviews. The consensus seems to be that Riz Ahmed is amazing in this and that it's beautiful shot and has great music. There are many who didn't like the Erica character and most thought that Kiefer and Liev Schreiber were terrific.
The biggest criticism has to do with trying to do to much in the movie. That being said, how do so many people rate it a 1? Even reviewers who didn't particularly like it gave it 2 out of 5 stars. The only answer is that in this politically divided world we live in, even the thought of looking at a different point of view, for many, is reprehensible. It's a pity.

people hate Muslims

they see any movie that may portray Muslim identity sympathetically and vote it down

Sadly, that's the only plausible answer. Only 4 people other than critics, who are notoriously tough on movies have reviewed this movie. If you are going to give it a one, at least have the courage of your convictions to articulate why! So far the only bad review from a viewer is incomprehensible and , I think, right wing dogmatic. I don't think that person actually even viewed the movie.

Not sure what it means, but according to Rotten Tomatoes the only movie with a higher per theater audience number this past weekend was Kon Tiki. It only played in 3 theaters in more sophisticated cities but there is an awful lot of interest.

On 2nd sept it's 6.6. yet most of the reviews i read here gave it about 7/8. guess those who hated the movie sidn't even bother to rave badly about it.

You have to realize that 10s and 1s mean very little on IMDB, its all in 2-9s. These are more honest.

You will have a lot of 1s from people who did not even see the movie because:
1. They didnt like the director, so they voted every movie he made a 1.
2. They didnt like the actor(s), so they voted every movie he(they) in a 1.
3. They didnt like the topic, so they rated it automatic 1.
4. They just want to have everything and likes to rate everything 1, trolling.
5. They actually saw the movie, walked out in the opening credits and now thing giving it a 1 is a "good way to show those people who didnt refund my ticket".
6. They are giving it a 1 just to drag it down in rating whether wanting other movie to be higher or just hating the score (more applicable to top rated movies, noone would bother with this i think).

Yes, there are plenty of people who are so stupid. And there are plenty of 10s who will vote 10 just to "drag it up" and to "oppose the 1 trolls". Thats why i always look at 2-9 instead.
I rated it a 8. It was good, but not perfect.

I think the topic was too controversial here in the US and was the reason for all of the 1's. I rated it an 8 too.

This film is underrated on IMDB because of racist trolling.

Last 3 films seen: Tazza 8/10, New World 9/10, and The Collector 7/10

The film is subtle in its morality and explores various issues and themes whilst trying to not pick a side. People prefer clear divisions between good and bad. Also, until the very end we do not know if Changez is a protagonist or antagonist, which creates further uncertainty when watching.
