From a Muslim's perspective, I don't mind the movie but the "lovemaking" scene could be quite a taboo especially if they're unmarried. True, it's an expression of love but still, come on!

reply

I agree, from the clip he seems like a very devout Muslim and then we suddenly see him making love to Kate Hudson. I could understand it if there was some sort internal conflict involved, like if he was torn between religion and love, but it doesn't seem to play out that way, that sorta breaks the movie for me. If he was raised in the US it wouldn't be a problem, but from the trailer it seemed like he was raised in Pakistan and this totally breaks the realism of it because a devout muslim would have an internal conflict to some degree before having sex out of wedlock.

reply

it's been a few years since I read the book, but if I remember correctly, he and his family are not particularly devout. And once he comes to the U.S., he is trying very hard to become American. I don't remember how the love affair begins in the book -- he may have had more ambivalence than the movie shows.

I agree, from the clip he seems like a very devout Muslim and then we suddenly see him making love to Kate Hudson.

I knew of some muslims when I was in college who people thought were devout because they gave that impression, yet they slept around...with western women. Some people think that muslim men have permission from Allah to do that - critics who say "muslim men can have any women the right hand posesses" others say it's debatable.
Changez didn't seem devout, he was middle-class and western educated and only went into a mosque on a visit to Turkey. If he was devout he'd have a longer beard and would be reading the koran daily. He was certainly more nationalistic as a Pakistani and more political, but not overtly devout. The scene where he said part of him was excited when the twin towers were attacked I don't think was to do with his beliefs in Islam, since he wasn't devout at that time, but certainly political and his mind would be thinking "the great America that bullies and bombs smaller countries has been hit hard where it hurts - it's financial capital". Changez did say that he wasn't celebrating the thousands who died in the twin towers. The film wasn't about Changez becoming a devout muslim, it's to do with his identity as a Pakistani and choosing sides (his side was already chosen for him). Though he loved America, it wasn't who he was inside. His friends were all political, none were Taliban-Mujahideen-jihadi-types.

reply

Well-said...I completely agree.

Really? I've known a lot of Muslims and they are into everything - drugs, alcohol, crime, women. One I know (and he was off to the mosque every Friday) had sex with a different woman every day for a year. He was quite proud of it, certainly there was no conflict. He grew up in Dubai and was having sex with hookers when he was 14. Where he drew the line was bacon. I knew Muslims who had no problems orchestrating scams and picking up bar girls in Thailand, but drew the line at pork products.

reply

Wouldn't really matter unless it was in "strict" muslim countries, I live in Egypt and I've seen Egyptian movies that had love scenes between unmarried couples.

reply

Exactly. It's all about the social culture of each countries.

Take for example, at the Oscars when Michelle Obama announced Best Picture. I saw a news coverage that made changes to what she wore that night in an Iranian TV. They actually "covered" her top when in actual fact Obama was wearing a spaghetti strap. But in other moderate Muslim countries like in Southeast Asia particular Malaysia and Indonesia they did not edit the video at all.

So it all boils down to the cultures of each individual countries.

1st of all let me tell you I am a muslim and a pakistani. I never wanted to be the both but my luck was not with me when i was born and is still not with me as I am still the both.

I am not saying that I dont want to be a muslim. but a pakistani is altogether a different matter. Anyways dont want to deviate from the point. We Pakistani muslims are not extremist yeah we do pray 5 times a day most of us do and we fast for a month but it doesnt makes us cruel that we would laugh or feel being happy on such a tragic events of 9\11 or bombing on Afghanistan or Iraq.

I remember these events and i assure you I did felt really sorry when it did happened. I felt sorry for those humans who had passed away in these incidents.

While kyzasoze2003 said that "Some people think that muslim men have permission from Allah to do that - critics who say "muslim men can have any women the right hand posesses" others say it's debatable."

Thats purely wrong concept. the concept is Halal(Right) and Haraam(Wrong) In Islam a Man can marry 4 times at a time and maximum 7 while a woman can marry as much times as long as she is not currently married only once at a time. The Halal way of bedding a woman is only by marriage. While without marriage its Zina(Sin).

Once a woman is married to a man she is Halal to that man. In movie there was another concept of Idat. Idat is not exactly for mourning purpose but its for confirmation of pregnancy. You see Islam says offsprings are of Man who sow the seed in the woman. While Men is of his wives.

I hope you might understand us. We have no ill will towards any non-muslims. the terrorists and extremists are someone else we are not them. In fact the terrorist or a murderer or a mass murderer cannot be a muslim in any case at all. Believe me they are doing us more wrong then anybody else because now everywhere in the world we are seen as terrorists. We are falling head first on the ground we do not deserve that we are also as noble and kindhearted as anyother noble and kindhearted person in the world.

I'm a Punjabi Pakistani. I drink, I sleep with women. I also haven't set foot in a mosque in ages. I live in Islamabad and more than half the people I know are just like me. But I still feel this Muslim sense of identity inside me. Culturally, if not religiously.

This movie perfectly depicted my emotions. "Yes, I'm a Muslim. Yes, I'm a Pakistani. Yes, I hate your people for what they do to my people. But that's not all I am" These lines touched me. It's really hard for someone from the west so comprehend this but even people like me secretly despise Americans for all the hatred they've bred within themselves just because someone's passport says Pakistani. There's a Changez inside every Pakistani.

Politically, we despise the west and all it has done to the world today. But that doesn't mean we're cave dwellers and would go on Jihad. Almost everyone here despises the west and the Taliban equally. Some even believe they're working together. The complexities alone are too strange for someone to understand if they aren't Brown skinned.

I hope no one is offended by what I've just said but watching this movie has made me realise that it's alright for even the most liberal of us to admit that what's wrong is wrong and it doesn't make me a jihadist if I speak freely about it.

I'm off to enjoy my weekend with a few mates. We'll have beer, talk about women and generally do everything a 20 something year old would anywhere else around the world. But we will also hold an opinion because we were not born with white skin. And I think that's quite alright.

Cheers.

mansoor,

That is quite alright. But believe me when I say this, not all of us Americans have "bred hatred within themselves just because someone's passport says Pakistani." That is a generalization, and it is false. I am living proof that not all of us have hatred and prejudice bred from within.

I am a firm believer that almost all prejudice is taught, and not actually bred from within. And I believe that statement applies to all citizens of all countries, not just America, not just Pakistan, etc. People become prejudice because their elders, peers, or society teaches them these things. It is our job as individuals to take note of these prejudices, and learn from them, so that we don't carry them on to our children.

reply

Well here in Pakistan, hatred for America is not because of the belief of whether or not American have bred hatred within themselves just because someone's passport says Pakistani. "Yes, I'm a Pakistani. Yes, I hate your people for what they do to my people. But that's not all I am" these lines explain it very well. Deep inside every Pakistani there is resentment towards America and at least a bit of hatred, i don't mean to say it negatively and i don't mean the kind of hatred that you would pick up weapons and go for Jihad against America, We have hatred for the Taliban as well. Most people in Pakistan believe (I am one of those people)that it is America who has brought upon us this curse of the Taliban who go bombing and killing so many people all around Pakistan, It is seen that this is America's war but it is only Pakistan that is losing, it is only Pakistanis dying right now. It is not that I blame every single American for this, because i don't. Most Pakistanis don't have anything against Americans but there is always some hatred against "America". You maybe somewhat right that prejudice is taught but however prejudice also built up due to whats happening all around you.

reply

You do yourself no favors here. No American would say that all Americans despise all Pakistanis. Hell, quite a few Americans are Pakistani by birth. American's know better than to assume they're a monolithic group. Is there really a Changez inside every Pakistani? Is it really impossible to trust Pakistanis because, deep down, they all hate America? That sounds like the most inflammatory rhetoric you could assign to your own people. You're doing exactly what you think Americans do -- lumping everyone in Pakistan into a group. And perhaps you're right. Maybe all Pakistani do hate America on some level. You'd know better than non-Pakistani, right? But if you want to condemn Americans for believing horrible things about Pakistanis, doesn't it make sense not to confirm that belief in the first place?

Incidentally, Britain has done far worse to Pakistan than America ever dreamed of doing. Why not hate them? You have far better reasons to hate Britain than America. Politically speaking, cooperation between America and Pakistan has been far more cordial in times past than between Pakistan and England. Even India has gotten upset about America cozying up to Pakistan.

From a Catholic Mexican (who has white skin and is rather agnostic):

I can understand you perfectly. Sex out of wedlock is a sin in most any religion, that doesn't mean everyone follows their own religion's precepts. I have kids with fair skin, blond hair and blue eyes, I went to college, have a Master degree and at nearly 70 I'm about to get my doctorate; my English vocabulary and orthography are better than more than half the American population, nevertheless I get treated like trash everytime I enter the USA; thus, I avoid is whenever I can. There's nothing there that can interest me other than making an airport connection.

Cheers!

Jorge.

PS, my business assiciates and my best friends are dark skinned so I grew up knowing racism is BS, out of totally insecure ignorants.

Nobody can say this is Islam view, Islam is religion like any religion, you can't talk about Christianity view or Jewish view, don't you?
Muslims as individuals can give their views, same as any group of people, some will put their understanding of Islam at first when they think of this movie, others will understand that this is only a movie and will evaluate it as a movie without any sensitivity.
For me it was a good movie, not masterpiece and not great, only good, I watched it because of Kate Hudson, it wasn't her best movies, and it wasn't her worst either.

reply

Islam is not like any religion, because only butthurt Muslims go boom.
