SUPER fantastic but...

I fell in love with this movie, so I did some research and read up on the case.

Obviously, the movie tried to make you feel more empathetic/compassionate for the girls and their logic behind WHY they did but they did...
but when you read about the actual case AND the vagueness behind it (due to Canada law, or something), the whole thing is very blahhhhh

Way to go, Hollywood.

In real life the girls were nasty and vindictive. According to a Toronto star journalist the girls giggled when the prosecution showed their mothers autopsy pictures. In reality the mother had two jobs and was saving up for the girls' college funds. However, there were signs that the girls had been sexually abused but they never said anything about it.

I thought the same thing!

Yes, however, it seemed to work because the story was told from Sandra's perspective; that is, she diluted herself into believing her actions were reasonable, thus we (as the audience) also did, at least to an extent... Which brings me to the next point...

Even though the telling indeed caused empathy, my final feeling was that the two made an unnecessary response and were inadequately punished -- no need for a life-long or death penalty but a longer sentence wouldn't have been unreasonable.

Ultimately, it's important to remind yourself these were people in adolescence, greatly inexperienced in moral/ethical decisions and still struggling with emotional conundrums even beyond those created by the depicted situations. Therefore, the irrational, sometimes eerily so, behavior illustrated is actually quite realistic.

I enjoyed the movie but as I do before watching any true story movie I search for the real story online. I'm glad I did.

The true story is shocking and horrible. Even more horrible is the Canada law that protects them. I am glad their real names and pictures have been released online.

I watched the movie and I had zero sympathy towards the two daughters. There behaviour and what they did to their mom was horrible. However it's obvious by the comments on this board I'm in the minority with my opinion of the two daughters and I'm not even surprised by that.

In the minority, but not alone. Old enough to live on their own, but tried and sentenced as minors? I thought American law was screwed up.

It's just a movie; for entertainment. In reality, people who murder don't do it for good reasons. I suspected that in reality, these girls were real bitches who did it for the money.

I'd seen a longer interview with Stan Brooks about the movie, but the following was all I can find. He missed the mark in our cases.
