I Missed John Stewart

Good movie in general, but I really missed having John as part of the team. Hal does nothing for me as GL. He and Flash are interchangeable with the quips and I much prefer Flash. Nathon Fillon did a good job, but he didn't add anything special.

I get that WB wants me to support their live action movies with Hal, but I'm not going to do that. I don't really care what they do on the live action side, give me my Phil LaMarr and John Stewart as the Green Lantern.

You see, I have a problem with how John Stewart is protrayed in the animated movies/shows.

In the comics, he is a GREAT character. But in the Bruce Timm show, he was SO bland.

I'm not knocking you for liking the character, as I recommended picking up some Green Lantern comics that he is in because you'll see what I mean. He isn't bland in the comics, but apparently they don't know how to handle him when it comes to animated stuff.

Luckily, they do a decent job with Hal.

Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and sh*t and Jack left town

I prefer John Stewart too. Hal always comes across as a tad immature.

Thanks to the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon, I've become a fan. If by some chance there is ever another GREEN LANTERN animated movie, I'd like to see one about John. I'd also like to see one with him, Hal, Kyle Rayner, and Alan Scott. And yes, I know Alan Scott's ring was powered by magic. But I am curious how they could share continuity without making Alan one of the Green Lantern Corps.

I hate how people pass over Alan ... I know he was not a part of the Corp but come on he was the first Green Lantern .

The arc of history does not bend toward justice through capitulation cast as compromise.

reply

Thats true when one looks at it from the perspective of the original GL getting his due!

Alan Scott "IS" the first Green Lantern, just as you could also come out and say Jay Garrick is the original Flash who wasn't anything like Barry Allen or Wally West later versions.

For those Golden-Age DC superheroes to get their main focus though in a brand DTV movie as it were? You'd have to convince Warners to put out a "Justice Society Of America" animated movie! Can't see why not, considering the comics book under Geoff Johns and David Goyer were extremely well written. If both Johns and Goyer made the JSA comics more modern day relevant, why couldn't a new DTV animated movie from Warners do the same thing also? Wasn't "Justice League: The New Frontier" a beautiful 'Silver-Age styled tribute, so why not also do a Golden-Age tribute to DC superheroes as well.

Food for thought methinks?

I'd love to see a Justice Society Cartoon movie, but WB would likely reject it, because it would not be a good sell.

It was Kyle Rainer in the original Tower of Babel story, so why isn't he getting any representation?

I'm just waiting for the sun to shine.

reply

Yeah i missed that banter Batman has with Kyle Ryner in the Watchtower about his personal life (Ryner's an artist) in the Tower Of Babel story.

Batman was being genuinely nice while kinda tactically finding out about his teammate thinking methods and figuring out his personality without him even knowing it. This is what JL: Doom seriously lacked in spades in terms of character development and thensome with its retooled storylines.

Batman = One sly S.O.B. who never takes a break from being Batman 24/7 etc.

Kyle Rayner & Alan Scott both need some more love in animation. And it would be nice to see John again in some future DTV, but I guess they figured since they neglected Hal in the DCAU beyond a time hopping cameo they feel obligated to make up for lost time.

That's only for the JL cartoon series though. Everything else involving Green Lantern, Hal was always upfront and center. Kyle has yet to make a proper debut, and all the stories that molded the Green Lanterns corps in the comics came from his run. Alan Scott gets the shaft in every medium form.

RIP AJ Cook's career. Her career dies everytime she's on the sh#t known as Criminal Minds.

Actually Kyle was the Green Lantern they used to introduce the GL mythos into the DCAU back in the 90s with the solo Superman series. Alan Scott appeared once on Batman the Brave & The Bold, where he hilariously clashed with Guy Gardner ("What do you expect from a 2nd rate back up Green Lantern with a bad haircut?" - he totally owned Guy with that one) and a non-speaking cameo on Young Justice.

I like John Stewart the best because of all the Green Lanterns he has a more
authoritative persona.

Although the Green Lantern they used in Superman: TAS was named Kyle Rayner, he was really Hal Jordan in look, personality and origin story.

There was some weird executive meddling going on, where someone big at DC wanted Timm and co. to only use current title holders for "legacy characters." That's the same reason why the second Robin in the Animated universe was Jason Todd in origin and personality but was called Tim Drake.

Not really,HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES.

Green Lantern: The Animated Series
Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of Time Warner's Turner Networks unit, originally announced that Green Lantern: The Animated Series would be a part of Cartoon Network's original programming. A preview of the show was featured at the 2010 New York Comic Con featuring test footage, characters/story description, and art work. Bruce Timm, who produced the entire DC Animated Universe, also announced at New York Comic Con that he'd be producing the show. A total of 26 episodes had been ordered for the first season. By the time of New York Comic Con, thirteen had already been planned, and five had already been recorded. The series is not intended to be an origin story, due to Warner Brothers already releasing a film based on the characters' origin. The series is the first television series by Bruce Timm to be rendered using CG. Green Lantern: The Animated Series is also the first time Green Lantern has been rendered in CG. The producers have confirmed that it was requested that the character Sinestro not be used. The producers also confirmed that if the series was a hit, other Lanterns like Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner might be introduced.

Now when john and the others come hal will not be in the center.

Now check out some other stuff John was in.

John stewart
Television
* Phil LaMarr reprised his role of John Stewart in the Static Shock episode "A League of Their Own." He and the Justice League call in Static and Gear in order to help fight Brainiac. In "Fallen Hero," John Stewart ends up attacking Dakota. It turns out that Sinestro orchestrated an event that resulted in Sinestro stealing John Stewart's battery source. Once this was found out, Static helped John Stewart defeat Sinestro and reclaim his battery source.

* John Stewart appears in the Young Justice animated series voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson. He appears as a member of the Justice League. In the one-hour pilot episode, "Independence Day", John is shown working with Hal to contain Blockbuster after he has been defeated by Aqualad, Superboy, Robin and Kid Flash as well as carrying the non-flying mentors Aquaman, Batman, and Black Canary. In episode "Alpha Male", John is shown helping to rebuild the Mount Justice after it is attacked by Red Torpedo and Red Inferno. In episode "Failsafe", a mind-training exercise conducted by Martian Manhunter, an illusory John and Hal are apparently vaporized by invading aliens. In episode "Agendas", John and Hal were convenes recruitment for the new Justice League members; he and Hal immediately dismiss the idea of adding Guy Gardner to the League. John is among the Leaguers brainwashed by Vandal Savage in "Usual Suspects" and "Auld Acquaintance". In "Alienated", as a result of his actions, he and several other members of the Justice League are forced to leave Earth and stand trail for hostile actions against alien planets that they committed while under Savage's control.

Video games
* John Stewart is a featured character in the video game Justice League Heroes, voiced by Michael Jai White.

* Stewart is also featured in Justice League: Injustice for All and Justice League: Chronicles.

* John Stewart appears in DC Universe Online, first voiced by Ken Thomas and now by George Washington III as a non-playable character.

Other appearances

* John Stewart was portrayed by Tim Meadows, wearing his Green Lantern: Mosaic costume, in a Saturday Night Live sketch inspired by the then-recent The Death of Superman comic storyline.

* John Stewart appears (alongside the Green Lantern Corps) in a non-spoken cameo role in the Duck Dodgers episode, "The Green Loontern".

Miscellaneous
* John Stewart has appeared in the Justice League Unlimited spin-off comic book.

Surprised that no-one jumped on this comment yet. Anyone?

Wasn't Fatality out to kill John Stewart for the death of her species? Or am I confusing them all up?

Fatality was out to kill John for the destruction of the planet Xanashi (comic odyssey), even though she was actually created to be a Kyle villain. Now that she's a good guy, it makes no difference.

She's a good guy in the comics now, true, but this is a movie.

Hal is my favorite GL by far, but I prefer John Stewart in the Justice League. His soldier like personality seems to fit in with that team better. I even like Kyle better in that because like someone else mentioned, his personality is a different sort in relation to the others in the JL.

I did too, but I thought Fillion's voice worked well. Unfortunately, his storyline was awful.

Green lantern story was the strongest in this film.

Looking at this board, I'm pretty sure I'm the only Hal fan here lol. Don't get me wrong I also like the other Green Lantern such as Kyle (cause he's an artist, and like me loves to draw), Steward (He just seems like an interesting character to me), and Scott (He was the first, that alone makes him awesome to me). But to me, I see a lot of myself in Hal, he can be egotistical, brash, and seems to never take things seriously, but that's just how he deals with the ridiculous situations he has to face. Plus he always wants to do the right thing, and is arguably just as moral as Superman (even though at one point he was a racist I think, but I guess that has changed since before, and after "Rebirth" he viewed John as one of his closest and most trusted friends.) That being said, I hated how they handled at him 52 reboot. To me, they basically just gave Hal Guy Gardiner's personality. I haven't read any of the new stuff so I'm not sure if that has changed.
