Wouldn't they hear the ship breaking?

I'm sure the sound of warping metal and snapping wires would at least rumble the ship a little. Did they not hear it? Maybe I'm just stupid and they did in the film, but If I recall correctly no one seemed to notice.

You don't.

Huh. Thanks for the answer, I'm going to go get my hearing checked.

If you recall... right before the ship broke up, the Engineer was talking all about the ship humming and whining, the overstressed welds were vibrating.. humming loudly. The ship was "talking to him". And he was telling the Captain they needed to slow down.

I must've gone to the bathroom during that scene.

reply

It was the opening minutes of the film... weak bladder?

I guess I thought it was better to go before any major scenes came up. Ironic.

reply

More to the point... the scene was just prior to and during the break up of the tanker. How can you claim "If I recall Correctly, that no one seemed to notice" if you admittedly were in the bathroom?

YOU cannot claim that you missed the scene in question by being in the bathroom and at the same time make a claim that no one heard what you were not even there to see.

reply

Well idk. I just assumed I didn't miss anything. I remember some scenes before and after and my mind just deleted the gap I guess. It has been a while.

cgsailor is just being a dick... the guy in the engine room was talking about the small crack in the hull that had been welded... he said that was coming apart, at no point did he say I heard the tanker splitting in half...
And yeah, I'm not a sailor, and the engine room might be noisy... but you'd think they might notice, hear a loud bang or something, if the ship split in half...

reply

You do remember that scene when the bow hits the wave trough (just after you see/hear welds popping on the deck and side) and everyone gets tossed about in the engine compartment when the stern section sets heavily..... including some people breaking limbs
?

Guess that was the moment.... I also had the strong impression that they had the engine noise level turned down so you could actually hear the dialogue of the machinists and engineers.

reply

Yep, I thought that was when the tanker split in half as well. Affleck & co. wouldn't have realised it with all the noise and chaos at their end.

reply

You are exactly right. If you have never been down in a ship's engineering space it is very loud, you have to raise your voice just to be heard. For the sake of the movie, they reduce it so we could hear the actors. The humming noise along the weld was the ship warning them that there was too much strain. Remember, these were extreme conditions, and when ship broke, it did so violently. It sheared right along the bulkhead. The T-2s tankers were notorious for this.
