I hate New England Accents!

Absolutely awful and annoying. There's a reason it's not used a lot in movies. Watch The Perfect Storm, you're going to want to change the channel once the townies start talking, and it's a good movie!

Hmm won't bother me

Well, I guess you're just going to have to give the movie a miss then
The film is set in New England. Would you prefer they spoke with Southern accents?
From the sound of its trailer, Black Mass with Johnny Depp, sports a lot of Boston accents too. Because, amazingly, the film is set in Boston.

That's a shame to be hung up on such a petty thing as an accent. Have you ever heard a Cockney English accent? That's one of the most extreme accents I think that might replace your hate of New England accents. But I enjoy or respect most any accent.

reply

There's no such thing as a New England accent.

reply

I guess you would say so if you were completely ignorant. In fact North Eastern New England English is classified as its own "dialect," which is one step stronger than simply an accent. Boston New England accents are among the most distinctive accents in the US after southern.

People who were blue collar and born 90 years ago in the Boston area had very very strong New England accents

reply

I wouldn't even bother arguing that point i said something along those lines and people just don't want to listen.

I'm not ignorant, I'm a Bostonian. I have a much better understanding about my Boston accent than you do. That's why I know it's a Boston accent. Not a non existent New England accent. You probably think everyone from Massachusetts speaks with one.

reply

I'm from Australia and most people that try to pull off an aussie accent always go for what they perceive as one which is really thick. But we do have Australians that speck with an extremely thick aussie accent, which does get misunderstood as how all Australian's talk.

Clearly not. If you're unaware of the existence of a New England accent, and you claim you're not ignorant, then one can only assume you've spent your whole life in a coma or under a rock. It's even worse that you're unaware of it, and claim to be from Boston.

It's regularly referred to as New England English or Eastern New England English, and it also encompasses separate specific dialects like Boston, which itself has its own sub-dialects.

Take a class on American accents. This is common knowledge, so I'd recommend you don't go around debating it. You'll make yourself sound ignorant, which is what you claim not to be. More so if you're truly from Boston and clueless to this fact.

I love how people get lost in the irony of their own nonsense. Apparently, according to you, I can't be less than cordial, in my replies, but it's perfectly OK for you to be that way to me, because you don't like what I said or how I said it. Grow up. You're not very bright, and resorting to name calling shows it. I can't argue with a childlike mentallity, you'll never comprehend that if you can act a certain way, others can too.

As for the accent, I can't debate as to why you're clueless about it. That's a personal issue. Educate yourself. Assuming someone is making something up, because you're clueless to it, is simply ignorant.

reply

Let's just try to enjoy the film guys
It's for entertainment
Let's try to make 2016 a "cup half full year" by remembering that this is a film commemorating heroic actions of ordinary people that we all wish we could emulate
It's supposed to warm the cockles of your heart (which means, make you feel good!)

Thank goodness you were able to post an argument without looking like a complete dick.

reply

Clearly you failed in that aspect as well. Irony. Look it up.

I think you just made SawyerVsSylar's point for him/her. There is no one overall pervasive accent.

reply

Then that would be the same as saying there is no such thing as a southern accent. Different parts of the south have distinct differences in their accents and dialect. People still recognize them all as a southern accent though. New England most certainly has it's own accent in general. Specific areas of New England will have noticeable differences but all have far more in common.
Even Boston itself has different accents depending on which end of the city you're from. I can hear the differences because I've lived here for over 35 years. I'd never be so pretentious as to say that there is no such thing as a New England accent. Mostly for the sake of not sounding like a self important douchebag.

reply

I'm from the South and just came back from Boston and the Cape. You all have different accents and they are all so wonderful. Just like in the South, everyone talks differently. I think you're on point with what you're saying. There was only one person who I couldn't understand. He was very nice about repeating everything and frankly, I loved his accent. He was in the Boston Logan airport car rental. But everyone from each area speaks differently and that's perfect.

Hey sixpaws67, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Yankeeland. :)

I'm expecting you to be checking out Tom Hardy in Taboo on FX come January.

reply

You know it. I have already memorized every scene from Taboo's trailers. I know you have too! It cannot get here fast enough.

Louis C.K. once said, "There is no such thing as a Boston accent, it's just a region where people pronounce normal words wrong."

I love the accents in this movie. I thought the actors did a stellar job in sounding authentic. The story was riveting and I was pleased I learned something about the true superheroes of our world.

I can't imagine why the accent would annoy you so much though.

It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds.

reply

I'm Southern and I thought it was sexy and how did you expect people to talk in Chatham anyway?
