(SPOILERS) For the people who say this doesn't make sense..

This movie makes perfect sense. It's a group of kids trolling one girl, only to find smiley really exists. Every kill is planned and they are all in on it, eg. The babysitter at the start, the guy with the glasses kills her but really one of their friends is smiley as you find out at the end, but it's all planned to scare the main girl. And if you're wondering why the real smiley didnt come when they were doing the fake deaths, it's because they didnt actually believe in it. It's not really a bad movie when you understand it, but it had more potential.

It still doesn't make any sense. The video chat on websites are randomized like Omegle and Chatroulette, over 20000 people are on those websites so the possibilities of the trollers getting in the same chat as the one who's being trolled is... almost impossible in such a short time.

It could have been set up as they could have a fake version of the chat site on the college servers. still it's just a movie and it only had jump scares, nothing really disturbing like the movies i prefer.

They had some real computer nerds in the group, and Proxy did mention hacking. My take us that someone hacked the site or made a phony version.

The way i (possibly) understood it, smiley was not actually real during the movie. I vaguely remember ashley talking with the teacher, though i could be wrong about this, about evil being real and about evil making itself real. I think its possible that the trolling that these guys did to ashley created the real smiley because of how evil what they did was. It looked like the smiley from her dreams because that was what her death created.

I dont know, i could be wrong. Thats just an idea i had after watching it.

I'll just go with your idea because that makes far more sense than the actual ending ever did.

When I saw the movie, I got the impression that Ashley's spirit became Smiley and came back to get revenge for her death. The problem is that it doesn't exactly fit with her waking up post-credits. One explanation is that her spirit is split between a dark, vengeful Smiley persona and a normal, good-spirited Ashley persona, similar to how Alessa from Silent Hill split the good and evil parts of her soul so her innocence could live on after all the horrors she inflicted upon her town. Of course, I could be wrong, and the entire movie could have been some trippy Jacob's Ladder dream sequence.

What was the motive in mentally scarring one person? It was cruel, I was really hoping she would wake up in the end and kill them all one by one, they deserve it.

The motive is purely the morbid fascination I suppose.

If you've ever spent an extended time on anonymous forums you'll know that people are in to some pretty sick stuff.
The whole "do it for the lulz" thing was a comment on how a lot of people that create and post disturbing videos online do it for the sake of personal enjoyment and, to some degree, internet fame.

Then consider the numerous cases where a young person has commit suicide due to bullying via the internet.

Obviously the film was over the top, but it all makes sense.
It's a commentary on internet culture, specifically the small part of it obsessed with snuff/gore videos and bullying.

Sadly things akin to this genuinely happen in real life.

Also, apparently after the credits there is a very short clip of the girl opening her eyes but I didn't see it in the version I watched.

Well it was better than Scream 4 which had no redeeming qualities.

As the lecturer says in the film: why do some people do evil things? Because they can.

Ashley didn't die though.... She wakes up after credits on the driveway.
I got the impression that their INTENT was so evil that it birthed a dark spirit in the shape of Smiley.
