Have some questions... (Contains light spoilers)

Why was Nam-Yi (the main character) and Ja-In's (his sister) father and family killed? I know they were marked as traitors, but what did they do to deserve that?

The other thing is the river (Where the captured Koreans revolt against the invaders imprisoning them)... The king had made a law that you were marked as a traitor if you ever crossed this river even if crossed against your will? That's what I understood but no explanation is given. Is that general knowledge in Korea or what?

It's not mentioned in the movie but it's implied that their father was probably a political dissident. Maybe against the King's policy of tolerance towards the Manchus, So he spoke up against the impending invasion and was marked a traitor (or some backstory like that!)

I think the no-crossing law would be general knowledge especially for the border folks.

The opening of the movie depicts a coup d'etat that actually happened in history. The former king was overthrown and every member of the loyalist faction were killed as a traitor to the new king. The coup is called 인조반정 or injo-banjung.

Yes, and here's an interesting movie about the overthrown Joseon monarch when he was king.
