How are they burning through $50,000 a year?

When Sandy and Diane are infiltrating the records department at the company where Sandy works, he says that the guy who works the equivalent of his job at the other branch makes about $49,000 annual salary.

That seems like enough to live at least comfortably with, I don't see how Sandy and his family are living hand to mouth.

If money is that tight, why doesn't the wife work as well?

And why not invest $5 for a pack of condoms?

They aren't poor, but they don't have the disposable income that a guy in his position should have by then. He mentions that money will be tight when the girls need braces, college tuition, and weddings...

When he's doing his budget spreadsheet all that they have left is $14.95. It seems like not only will he have future expenses like braces and tuition, but even at the moment they are completely strapped. You'd have to be either living far beyond your means or really irresponsible to not be able to survive on what he makes.

If he makes 50,000, the most that would be taken for taxes would be around 8,000, probably less since he's married with 2 children.

That's about 41,000 left. $3416 a month should be more than enough.

It appears like a really out of touch conception of financial problems.

Well for one they live in downtown Denver. Any downtown metro area is very expensive. They have two daughters and another baby on the way. $49K does not go as far as it used to.

Most any decent area of a downtown metro is more expensive. Maybe the expenses in the script is based on the fox news mantra that says "if you make less than 50k in America, you are living in poverty". Fox is talking about NY and DC mostly but may use stats from other large metros. You can waste a lot of money eating out on a regular basis and on interest payments on credit card spending. Probably boats loads of toys and excess clothing for the kids with no end in sight as future braces and college is mentioned.

It was still a funny movie though a in few places it was over the top dumb, like the snake scene. Melissa McCarthy singing along with every song on the radio no matter where he switched to was hilarious to me.

You should try to live in Australia. In most of our capital cities you wouldn't get away with spending less than $4-500 a week rent or mortgage on a basic 3-bedroom family home.

Actually if you watch again, he says we SAVED $14.95 meaning they spent a little less than the previous month. It doesn't mean they only have 15 bucks left over from the months spendings, it just meant that they did better managing their money for that particular month.

The house alone is at least $2000/month

Weddings? In Ireland we pay for our damn weddings ourselves, if I ever married an American and moved to the US and had daughters, if they asked me to pay for their weddings I'd tell them to **** off

It in the script. Movie making wise, they thought of a popular place (a lot of people from everywhere would move to) & that would seem very nice for a family. (Denver)Then they added the average American traditions and expectations. It's just to make the movie look good.
When I was a young girl, I would ask so many why questions in movies. All she ever responded with was "Its in the script". So now that's how I respond to my children with their why questions while watching movies together.
