Considering that the film begins with the title card "Once upon a time", I don't think they had to think about it.

The film isn't a crime drama about what the cops do, it's a modern fairy tale about how two lost girls find love in unexpected forms.

Nice. Just stick a " Once upon a time" card at the start of any film and, voila, no need for the makers to think about resolving anything beyond the immediate.

Nobody on the IMDB likes anything anywhere at anytime.

Everybody got what they wanted.

*Spoilers*

Lily spent the whole film crying out for Mama and got to go with her. Victoria said that she loved Annabel and got to stay with her. Mama got her baby to love, and Annabel got the child that she didn't realize that she wanted.

lily was just getting to know Annabel and started to like her. why should she be seperated from her sister. Mama got her dead baby anyway. should have stopped at nearly possible happy end with lily and victoria staying with Annabel.

That was heartbreaking!

But look at Victoria when she recognizes the butterfly as Lilly: Victoria has a look of wonder of her face!

They won't be separated forever!

The scene with Lily in the bedroom pulling one end of a large blanket, the view we see is only Lily pulling one end and someone off screen pulling the other end at quite an elevated angle. Lily is not afraid and Victoria seems to know what's happening because she calmly walks into the bedroom and closes the door. Obviously this scene is a set up to intrigue us into thinking that someone else is in the house but it's not scary,
just like, okay, so it's the shrink's set-up guest house, so it's most likely the shrink pulling on the blanket, not a ghost for chrissake, it's 2013 after all. There has to be a logical explanation, but no spoilers here.

As Victoria is closing the door, you can see Lily walking past it, about six feet off the floor. (In the copy I watched, this happens at 32:00.) Did you think the shrink was making her do that?

The way I figure it, who all knew they were keeping those kids? The aunt and the child psychologist were killed off. There were never any visits from the police, Annabelle only gave vague details to her friends in the beginning and they moved off to their own isolated home.

Should we all live up to promises as does Rick Grimes.

There's a visit from the cops after Lucas ends up in the hospital, the hospital staff would know, and, you know, the press that swarmed them after the custody hearing because two little girls found in the woods is a little weird?

All they really need to do is break down a door or window at home. Aunt Jean broke into the house, hit Annabel with a lamp (explaining the bruises on her face) and took off with the girls. Victoria got away, and found her way home, but Lily went missing in the woods.
