Was this supposed to be set in...

...Pennsylvania?

Somehow I got that vibe.

Set in Virginia, filmed in Canada.

If it was set in Virginia (Clifton Forge, I think someone said?), why were there no southern accents?

Clifton Forge is pretty deep down in Virginia, in the Blue Ridge region near the border with West Virginia.

reply

Cause not all Virginians speak with Southern accents. A great many don't. Source: I live there. Also, and more likely, because they didn't film it in Virginia.

I am from Virginia as well. I think we get used to hearing the local accents and we don't think of them as being "Southern". I was unaware I had a southern accent until I was at a coffee shop in Saratoga NY and they all commented on my "drawl". Like where are you from again? And I said Virginia, and they said they could tell. But its like with each generation, the accents are fading, not just in Virginia but all over.

That said, while Richmond has a dense population of people who don't speak like Southerners, somewhere as deep into the Appalachians as Clifton Forge is more likely to be filled with Southern accents, so I refer back to "because it wasn't filmed there". If there's anything that TV and movies have taught me, it's that Canadians and Californians have no idea what Virginia looks and sounds like.

Richmond used to be distinctly Southern. My family has been there for 10 generations in the area. Like any city it has been changed. Many people in Richmond have lost the Tidewater Drawl. They still don't sound like Northern people do , though. You can still tell them apart from the Northerners that move there. As for Clifton Forge, you're thinking of Appalachia which is really something separate both in culture and in dialect. It is not really a Southern accent. Dolly Parton speaks this way. Its not the same as Southern accents. Its different.

The cabin was in Clifton Forge, 150 miles from where the Uncle and Annabelle live (in Richmond). She was in a band and he is an artist, and probably travelled a lot to perform and the Uncle seems to be from an upperclass family, as was the two girls' father. Living in Richmond, which is diverse in its population, and people don't all have accents. My family has lived in NYC for 6-7 generations, my parents both have heavy accents, although my mother's parents had hardly any; I have no discernible regional cadence or accent. People always ask where I am from, since I have trained in language not to have any particular accent, also I was educated in several different countries, and tried not to have any regional/global accent. I have been told by my peers and earlier in medical school and residency that it helps in my professional life as a neurosurgeon, since I sound more knowledgeable, considering that I finished my 9 year residency before I was 30 years old. (I started university at 15, and was in a 5 year program called the BA/MD, where I got my Bachelors of Science degree and an MD within the five-year period)

I've seen this movie twice. Is it just me, or in the beginning where credits were running and there was a map showing, was the map of Washington State? I could have sworn the camera panned over an area that was the border of Oregon.

If that's the case, whomever they paid minimum wage to find a map sucks at geography!

If I gave a *beep* what loose acquaintances or strangers thought about me, I'd have wilted long ago.

It doesn't really matter were the story takes place.

It might just as well take place in never-never land!

"Once Upon a Time..." Yes, that's how the film begins, with the title card that reads:

"Once Upon a Time..."

Where it takes place doesn't really matter.

I noticed that as well and assumed the film took place in either Washington or Oregon.
