The Exorcist

It's scary and has a creepy quality -- really creepy.

Same with the book. I've read it twice in the summer with plenty of sunshine, and the book is still creepy.

reply

Agreed. To me that movie is one of a kind. I've never experienced anything close since then.

reply

I was never scared at all by that film. I think it was because it was religious and I don't believe in religion. I also found it hard to be scared by a little girl being sick all over the place.

reply

You have no soul.

reply

You're a clown. There is no such thing as an actual soul. I also don't believe in religion and I didn't find The Exorcist (or any sequels or shows based on it) scary whatsoever. I guess that crap only works on brainwashed religious nuts.
I'd much rather like to believe that somewhere in the world there are monsters like the ones from The Ring or The Grudge, some kind of ghost/monster entities out there. Now that would be epic, and truly scary.

Sup, bitch, I'm a stone-faced, hard-line atheist and think The Exorcist is creepy as hell (no pun intended) because I have an imagination and don't expect a fictitious story to be realistic. That the cause of the possession was an actual Assyrian wind demon was frickin' metal.

reply

I agree with the religion thing. A belief in god is assumed and it must affect the way you view the film. There is a film, the title of which I've forgotten, which was about a serial killer who believed was killing demons for God. In the end it turned out he really was. That was very clever, and threw me completely. I wish I could remember its name.

I think you're thinking of Fraility. It's an awesome movie- one of my favorites!!

The movie that scared me the most is The Ring (2002).

I saw it in cinema when I was 11 (my friend and I had to lie about our age, since the movie was PG-12 in France... for good reason), and we were terrified. I remember my dad picking us up at the cinema, and even in the car with him in broad daylight, we were scared. We didn't sleep a wink that night (left the lights on and lay there holding hands), and I had to check my closet every night for weeks...

Other movies that scared me:
- Rosemary's Baby (1968)
- The Shining (1980)
- It Follows (2014)
- Dark Water (2002 - Japanese version)
- Mulholland Drive (2001) (not a horror movie, but some scenes are SO creepy!)
- In Fear (2013)
- The Strangers (2008)
- Repulsion (1965)

Sadly, very few movies scare me now. In recent years, the only one that really freaked me out was It Follows... But all these "haunted house/ghost/demon/spirit" movies like The Conjuring, Insidious and stuff just don't scare me at all.

.................
"You know, this is - excuse me - a damn fine cup of coffee."

reply

Personally I don't think Dark Water is very scary. Honestly i'm not sure it's supposed to be. While it has some supernatural aspects, it seems more... sad than scary, IMO. More of a drama than a horror movie.

reply

Good list, and I completely agree on It Follows. One of very few decent horror flicks in the last couple of years.

reply

I agree with The Shining, some scenes were genuinely scary as f--k! And Mulholland Drive might as well have been a horror, it had some incredibly weird and creepy filming indeed, some scenes that unnerved me. It felt almost like a horror film in a way. One of my favorite films of all time.

By the way, no one mentioned The Blair Witch project in the thread as far as I read down to anyway. That one really did freak me out when I saw it in theaters originally (I was 17 then I think). Actually had nightmares from it, was scared of the dark and going into the woods (especially at night) for some time afterwards. And that ending! Really got to me. It gets bashed a lot that film, but there were few horror films that managed to scare me as much growing up.

reply

Same here. I actually thought the big exorcism scene was funny, those 2 bozo's in her bedroom saying "the power of Christ compels you"? Ha ha, what? to throw up all over da place, too funny. And the mother, good grief Charlie Brown, she knows her nuttier-than-a-fruitcake daughter has killed one guy yet she keeps her locked up in that same bedroom with the long drop out the window??? Any mother would have the girl in a psycho clinic, padded cell, straight-jacket before she kills someone else. Let the doctors try and get her neuro transmitters reconnected you stupid woman.

reply

Sorry, but it's obvious you don't understand The Exorcist at all.

reply

I think I did, so tell me what I missed?

reply

Well, you missed the fact that she is possessed and not mentally ill.

reply

She was mentally ill, there is no such thing as possession unless you believe in gods, demons and fairy tales.

reply

Mama is a fairy tale.

It begins with the title card, "Once Upon a Time..."

reply

Yes but I wasn't talking about a movie.

reply

Oh, didn't you say that Mama (Edith) was mentally ill?

reply

I was talking about the Exorcist which I found both stupid and funny. Those priests at the end had me on the floor laughing and can you believe a loving mother would have her little girl tied to the bed in that freezing room throwing up all over the place? She would be in a psycho ward where doctors would attempt to reconnect her neuro-transmitters, which obviously are *beep* The 2 young girls in Mama had a similar problem but they didn't have 2 clown priests bringing the house down, but Jessica was pretty stupid going after them alone after she was KO'd, probably by one of the girls. Anyone else would have called 911 and let the cops deal with it. And yes, the original Mama was nuttier than a fruitcake but she was long dead.

reply

Oh, sorry, I missed The Exorcist part.

As for the other stuff, I can only make reference to Jonathan Rosenbaum, the noted film critic, who said all films are fantasies. I certainly think this applies doubly so to horror films.

In Dreams always scared the crap out of me when I was younger. Does anyone else remember that one? Session 9 was another bad one. The Woman In Black is the only recent movie that terrified me. Paranormal Activity 1 & 2 were good but after that were just crap and I still can't watch The Exorcist to this day.

reply

[deleted]

Yes.

The Woman in Black was very good.

reply

The sad thing is you're probably referring to the remake, aren't you...

reply

[deleted]

Well, I thought the original was creepy. But the remake was just another PG horror film for kids with a ridiculous CGI ghost. CGI ghosts have zero effect on me!

reply

[deleted]

It just didn't do anything for me. I agree that Mama isn't scary in the slightest though. Seemed like a kids film to me.

reply

[deleted]

No, you're second person to mention that short to me today though. I will have a look for it! :-)

Thanks for the link.
I can't say that really did much for me either though TBH lol.

I don't scare easy, but Solo (2013/I) is the scariest movie I have seen.

I watched this movie for the first time on July 21st, 2014. This movie creeped me out, particularly Daniel Kash's performance. He was so unsettling and disturbing, as Ray (And I thought Volker Flenske was creepy). He's the most unsettling villain I have ever seen in the movies. Daniel Kash my seventh favorite actor and he plays the male lead. I thought this was better than his other 2013 horror movie, Mama.

The morning after I first watched it, I dreamed that Ray was after me. At the moment, I'm working on a music video for it. I watched a clip of it, over a week ago. It was when Ray was repeating the last things, the girl said (in a high pitched voice). It disturbed me so much, that I was saying, "Go away, Ray.", before I went to sleep. No other movie has that effect on me.

I did that a couple of nights ago and I still dreamed about him the next morning. I dreamed that he was holding me down in the water, like he did with Gillian.

These movies scared me too.

Ring 2 (1999)
My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Paranoiac (1963)
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)
When a Stranger Calls Back (1993)
Dead Silence (2007)
Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer (2007)
Joy Ride (2001)
Wolf Creek (2005)
Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994)
Hallowed Ground (2007)
Psycho (1960)
Pulse (2001)
Ring (1998)
Ring Ø: Birthday (2000)
Saw II (2005)
The Maid (2005)
The Others (2001)
When a Stranger Calls (1979)
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Return to Horror High (1987)
Scared (2002)
The Phantom of the Opera (1983)
It Follows (2014)

Volker Flenske: (While torturing David) I don't know why you're doing this to yourself!

The original "woman in black". The tv movie - 1989.

reply

nah, the one with daniel radclifee. SO scary! :-S

reply

go home, you're drunk!

reply

The Woman in Black remake was a ridiculous CGI fest. What the hell did you find scary about it? Seriously, if you find that scary I recommend Goosebumps.

reply

i actually agree, i dont know what it is with that one, i just wanted to run out of the theater the whole time

i guess that its due to her ominous presence throughout the whole film, theres no "daylight safe scenes". shes always lurking in a shadow
