I respect King Robbo for being a pioneer, but his artwork is just out-dated and big, colourful lettering of his own name. Whereas Banksy's graffiti is inspirational, social-political and witty. Banksy does not claim to be original, but he is still loved and adored the world over.
(BTW - get well King Robbo - hope they find the b*stards who assaulted you)
The main gripe is that Banksy's art doesn't represent true graffiti. What Banksy does is basically just glorified " funny" T- shirt prints.He's giving graffiti a bad name in that he's changing it from an old school unique art form to something quite commercial and galleryesque. Im not saying is art is bad, some of it is quite original, just that street art/ grafitti is not the best avenue for his work. Anyone and their dog can make a stencil and buy a can of spraypaint so he is nothing special nor particularly talented in that regard.
Freehand spray painting IS the art of Graffiti, artists making there own font, style, the use of colour and trademarks and being known for it. There is some amazing freehand stuff out there.
Honestly I think everyone can agree that Banksy's stuff is incredibly over-rated.
