Really poor start but good third act

I thought things only started to get interesting/funny when Sun Wukong showed up...and the battle scenes were great. Ended abit abruptly too.

Most of the humor were weak and lame; he keeps using perverse and gross elements to try and draw laughs. He really needed Ng Man Tat and Lee Lik Chi to attain the high standard of humor in his older films.

Err, I think nostalgia (or selective viewing?) may have clouded your mind as to the absolutely "perverse and gross" kind of humour that Ng Man Tat and Lee Lik Chi got up to....

And extremely "weak/lame" characters with "weak/lame" jokes are precisely the "rare flora" that people expect from Stephen Chow films.... there is usually a maximum of only ONE completely normal character in each of his films.

I'm saying that I'd kill without batting an eyelid-- and you're asking if my eyes got dry?

Odd! I thought the first 2/3 were stronger than basically everything else after running into the Monkey King.

Basically it felt like two different movies. Too much time on the relationship build up only to find out that's not really point made it feel like a plot dead end to this prequel of sorts story.

kind of the same for me..

it felt like 2 movies...

still entertaining though.

Interesting...because I also thought the first 20 minutes or so weren't very good either. I thought once the scene began in the restaurant/inn that it got very funny. But as someone else noted, once Shu Qi got killed, and the climactic scene with the Monkey King began, I got bored again. Still, overall, I'd say I liked this film.

Wow, I'd say the opposite, great start, awful ending, it feels like 2 different movies.
