Was Burton...

A eunuch?
I still don't understand why Rebecca was so surprised when she grabbed his crotch - seemed to be more than just surprise that he wasn't aroused by her.

reply

Burton was castrated while being held captive.

I thought maybe he was, but did they ever come out & say it, or did I miss something? And who the heck was holding them captive anyway? I'm not sure if they said...

The incident confused me too. If he was castrated or maimed there, why would he let her reach into his pants? And the expression on her face WAS due to some surprise, and not that he was not aroused. .. ... And it was never explained.

reply

How much explaining did they really need to do? It was honestly quite obvious. His expression was that he didn't give many *beep* so I doubt he cared. He was in a cult and he got castrated after he did something (I can't remember) and they locked him down in some basement dungeon which is how Proctor and Burton ended up meeting.

From the trivia page: The unexplored backstory for Burton was that he was raised in a brutal cult where he first killed someone who brutally whipped him as a punishment. The producers wanted to explore more of Burton's backstory in the show, but didn't have the opportunity to do so.

His past is explored a little bit in the Banshee:Origins series.

You can find them either on welcometobanshee.com or on YT, it's been awhile since I've watched them.

reply

Thanks, didn't know the back-story. ... .... But you explain nothing as to my "confusion:" if he was maimed, why wouldn't he stop her from reaching into has pants?

reply

Yes, I did.

Why didn't he stop her? I don't think he cares how she reacts or doesn't. Burton isn't your average human being and doesn't react the way to those things that most people do.

reply

Burton was worse than castrated. They cut his manhood off. They stole this idea from Earnest Hemingway. He had desire, but no relief.

The scene with Rebecca putting her hand down Burton's pants didn't just happen for no reason.

This thread overlooks Burton's true contribution to the show. He was an ANAZING secondary character! Prima facie, he was a dork: suite, bow tie and eyeglasses. Sub rosa, he was a combination of battery acid and The Incredible Hulk. Did you know that Marty Rauch is a Shakespearean-trained actor? The combination of creative archetypal character design and real acting chops gave us an unforgettable bad guy. Let's give Burton his due.

EDIT: When Burton takes off his eyeglasses and puts them away, be afraid.

Be very fucking😈 afraid.
