All you people who gave this movie a four or less,

To anyone who gave this movie a four or less,I would like to ask why. Please justify your reason for the low score.

Also I will not accept any answer along the lines of
"It waz duh wurst moovee I evr saw becuz it waz duh most boringest moovee evar".
That doesn't count.

reply

Truth be told, no one owes u an explanation on why they dislike this film, nor should anyone concern themselves with whatever reason you'd deem acceptable. By all means, place your ego in check & get over yourself....

reply

I'm fully aware that no-one owes me any explanation. I'm simply curious.

Several questions are asked on the IMDb message boards. Several just like this one where people ask things such as "How could you give this movie a ten?" or "Why would people give this movie a one?" where no-one is owed an answer. But people answer them anyways right?

I also don't see what's wrong with not liking answer such as "It was boring therefore it is bad". It's like saying The Empire Strikes Back is the worst Star Wars movie because it was the "the most boring" of the saga and that Revenge of the Sith (Tiny spoiler for Episode III) is the best because there's lava in it. Would you accept that as an answer? Would you even be remotely satisfied with it? I sure wouldn't. I simply like to go a bit more in depth, bit more detail, that's all.
Nothing to do with my ego or any of that sort of business.

Please, kindly keep the accusations to yourself if you don't mind.

reply

To state u won't accept an answer based on guidelines you've set, & to say what answers "don't count" based on what u will deem as acceptable shows entitlement & ego your behalf. Thus, there are no accusations to keep to myself sense I haven't made any; I'm simply going by how you've presented yourself. Therefore, my original post was rather spot on, while the bulk of your response is nothing short of moot. So, again, please get over yourself....

reply

All right, fair enough.

I take that back so. You didn't accuse me of anything. But just for this particular movie, I have read in several placed that is was boring and that people would walk out of theater after 20 minutes. I also know some people who wouldn't go to see this movie because of the lack of dialogue and hence, would assume that they would find it boring.

Personally, I gave this movie a 9 (well actually 8.8, but IMDb user ratings only go up in ones). And before you assume that I think I am right because of an ego issue I apparently have (which I don't), I absolutely do not think that. I respect peoples opinions. If people wanna say this movie is boring, then fine. If people wanna say The Godfather movies were the worst movies in existence, then fine. It's a matter of opinion. There's no law to say what a good or a bad movie is defined as. I just wonder if there is anything else to it or maybe if there was more dialogue in it that they would like it (All is Lost, that is).

I may watch a lot of movies, but it doesn't make me a movie expert.

But I thought this movie was awesome. That statement is subjective, not objective. It's based on opinion, not fact. I didn't find it boring at all. I am just curious as to why people would give this a lower rating than lets say, Grown Ups 2 or Ghost Rider or something along those lines. Curiosity my friend. That is all. The reason I didn't really want an answer along the lines of "It was booooring" is because I have heard that too many times already and I would like to know why others thought it was a bad movie.

You can hate me, you can respect me, you wanna call me rude? Then that's just fine. But I can assure you, I certainly don't think my opinion is objective.

Moving on...

reply

I am not the horrible person this will make me sound like, but I don't care. This will be the easiest:

An old man with dementia, who has never sailed (maybe never even been on a boat) in his life, at least that he remembers, finds himself alone on a boat out in the middle of the ocean. He is woefully ill-prepared and is not with it enough to even do things in a rational order (a big storm? Time to shave), or realize that burning something in a plastic container... in a plastic life boat... is possibly not the best idea. Especially if it appears the boat he is attempting to signal is very far away.

I will add the ending provided the best part of this ridiculous, poorly "acted" movie, because my husband and I laughed heartily. How long can you hold the breath you did not take? How quickly can a boat that was nowhere near reach a burning life raft? How easily can you swim from quite a depth to the surface (the whole while leaving bubbles)... and reach up to the hand that is coming from someone hanging at least half-way out of their own boat apparently to simply reach under the water to get you??? It was a DOG! Obviously my own opinion though.

BTW John, if you have not watched the movie Broken Flowers I am going to suggest that you may like it.

reply

Broken Flowers eh? Well upon inspection, it seems to have quite positive reviews.

Might I ask why you think I may like it?

reply

Ah wait, I decided to have a look at your profile (hope you don't mind). You made it quite clear how much you disliked Broken Flowers.

Nonetheless, I may give it a go sometime. Whenever I do (Huge backlog), I'll report back to you with my thoughts.

I havent rated this movie yet... but 4 stars sounds about right.

Why a low rating: Like 'the aviator' its one of those movies that people enjoy while I just don't get. I was bored throughout the movie.

I was able to relate to the character (did many things id do). The scenes were well shot. Was an interesting premise. All that being said, it 'just didnt do it for me'.

If I had to compare this to other ;lifeboat at sea; movies ive seen id say this is much better then open water 2 (god I hated those characters) but not nearly as good as something like Life of Pi

The Aviator is one of the best 10 movies in movies history!! Its Leonardo's masterpiece!!

btw.. I liked "All is Lost".. I gave it a 7... the movie has a message, it says, never lose hope and do not give up! its a simple message many many many people need to be reminded of.

reply

Really, you do not need to get back to me. I know everyone has different tastes though, so I am thinking it must be the same people who like these films. I know someone who went to school for film who has Broken Flowers listed as one of his favorites (or at least did around that time). That movie is more subjective at least.

I usually just come on IMDb quickly to look up things and aren't even signed in. I felt a need to try to counteract the 7 star rating on this to help others who may be similar, somewhere more central would seem more accurate, even though there are just so many things WRONG with this movie. This experience has reminded me to consider not just looking at the overall rating though for a movie, but to consider checking out the reviews more often.

Funny, but I also did a literal lol at that part. Maybe it was a nod at Airplane II :P

My thoughts exactly. Why would somebody so ill-equipped take on a sailing journey of such magnitude? Doesn't know how to use a flair or which one would have been appropriate to use at which time. Has to learn to use a sextant on the fly. And yeah, lighting the fire in a rubber boat?

Just seemed to be an ill-conceived ripoff of 127 Hours.

He does however most likely know how to spell flare.

Actually the ending was perhaps the least comical part considering the director has said that it is left for interpretation and is predominately a "death dream." Similar to the other ships that have missed spotting him, so does this light in the far distance. As he is dying, steadily sinking after accidentally destroying his last, literally, strand of hope, he imagines an alternate ending for himself. I am not remotely religious so I will not go as far as to say it is the hand of God or any other such fantasy, but it is simply an alternate universe in which he is saved but really he is sinking into death. Kind of like Titanic when the old lady sees Leona's she drifts off to death or other movies which leave an open ended question "did they actually die." In this case, since the rest of the movie attempts accuracy, the outrageous flaws at the end make it apparent that these factors are completely improbable if not impossible...And I believe this for the same points you used, it is impossible to have saved him at this point therefore I think had he not set his boat on fire, this would have been yet another missed opp to be saved. Now there were many laughable wtf moments so your rating is adequate, lol.

reply

Yea, I can see why you don't like this film. You clearly didn't look into it too much and are obviously a very literal person.

The director makes it obvious that the man has obviously chosen to be alone (the dialogue at the start suggests he has regrets about his old life, he completely ignores the letter in the celestial navigation instrument which was probably a gift, etc.). If he had wanted to abandon his old life, he wouldn't care about being the best sailor in the world (and in my opinion, he seems to be quite compotent anyway)

The reason he shaves is because he is waiting for the storm to arrive and there is nothing he can do but wait for it and hope... He also has a look of determination and preparation on his face.

The life-boat scene at the end; In my opinion he has given up (after already missing 2 ships) and sees this as his last chance for a rescue. Therefore, he reluctantly throws everything on the fire (his acting makes it obvious he is reluctant when he throws the book on) in the hope it might give him a better chance of being seen.

The hand at the end; I dont think this is literal and is probably representing his death and passing on to the next life (that is entirely up to the viewer though).

Overall, a very good film, easily misunderstood if you don't pay attention.

For whatever it's worth, I just watched the Blu-ray to see if I liked it as much now as when I saw it in the theater. Answer: YES!...Frankly, I thought it was the best film to come out last year and the Academy response is partially why I haven't watched the Oscars in over 5 years. For those who are critical of the film because it's not "sailor-worthy" enough, maybe they have a point; but since being on the water has always made me sea-sick, their criticisms are irrelevant to me...a great film and another great performance by Redford!

reply

Well, I didn't boycott the Oscars since then but I felt the same way. As the film started I thought this is probably not going to work but I was curious. Seriously, a whole film with just aging sort of commercial actor Robert Redford, not even saying more than a word or two? He didn't even invent a soccer ball guy for an excuse to talk. A few minutes later I was in it and I too thought it was one of the best films and definitely one of the best acting jobs of the year. Redford absolutely deserved a nomination and I would have voted for him to win.

Every film has a few inconsistencies (just read the "goofs" here) and maybe an occasional bit of unreality to make the story work. I'm very critical of films that are supposed to reflect reality and then deny it, but I didn't notice a thing in this one. The anti-reality crime is bad when it is overall and basic, but a few details here and there aren't a serious problem.

Great film.

Joker_Forever, don't be a douche. He had a legitimate question and he just wanted a well thought out answer. I think you need to get over yourself. Who the hell made you judge and jury of the message board world?

reply

Your response is nothing short of a testament to your idiocy. Congratulations, you've just won the *beep* of the year" award...

reply

To say it is wrong to set guidelines for responses is narrow minded. Many polls and surveys require guidelines and certain categorical types of answers, with many thrown out for not meeting those qualifications. If someone doesn't like a movie because it was too long, this says nothing of the quality of the script or the actors, thus, does not really judge the merits of the movie itself, but, rather, the attention span of the viewer. Therefore, as an answer for such as the survey being taken in this thread, it does not qualify as an answer.

You know that if you're unable to write using real words, your opinion is immediately discredited, right?

You know that.

Anyone who thinks this movie is "unrealistic" is unequivocally simple.

reply

You ask a good question, but don't hold out hope that you will get any meaningful answers. So try not to take it personally.

I gave it a good rating, it is a good movie, so I can't comment on your actual question. Some people just have no taste in movies, or just can't appreciate a good story.

Out of 22000 voters just over 1000 said it's 4 or less. Why care about these people? A movie can't please everyone. Impossible. Most people loved it, but they don't troll the boards.

reply

I never gave it any rating at all, that is how little I think of this movie, I fell asleep, literally, no joke, this boring ass stupid slow as hell no dialogue having piece of garbage literally put me to sleep. They should re-market this as a medical aid for insomniacs. If this movie starred Joe Nobody instead of Sundance no one and I mean no one would have seen it and this board would not exist.

I hope this cured some of your curiosity!

But Seriously Your Opinion Is Wrong

reply

Same here, almost. I rented it from Redbox, but could not finish it. That is a buck-thirty down the drain.

reply

I wouldn't even ask if I were you, because it would just infuriate me at all of the idiots that can't get through a film that doesn't have fights, explosions, sex, nudity, or sophomore humour in it...

My guess would be that most of the people who thought this film was boring are those "MTV generation" types who have to have scenes change every five minutes and must have stimulating dialogue. They are probably also mostly under the age of 30...

This was a brilliantly-made film and should win an Oscar for the cinematography. I gave it an 8.

Finally! Someone who gets it. I was at first astonished by the negative reaction to this film, especially the comments that it is boring. Then I realized, like you, why and how they think: no car crashes, no shouted f words, no gun or fist fights, no leaping tall buildings in a single bound.

I won't even go into the poster who decided the sailor had dementia (what makes him think that?), or that he found himself on a sailboat not knowing where he was or how to sail, or light a flare. Incredible. He was sailing his own sailboat alone across some vast ocean; people do it all the time. Why is that so hard to understand? Or that his boat, under sail, collided with a shipping container and sustained damage. How many every day sailors ever find themselves in a predicament where they need to light a flare? Very few, I'm guessing, since that's an emergency tool. Added to that, the man had been in a lifeboat with little water and a lot of sun for six days; he just might not be functioning as he normally would, when completely hydrated and well. Comments such as these imply movie goers more comfortable with super heroes and/or action film characters such as those played by Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis (in the old days), Liam Neeson, etc. In other words, fantasy world stuff.

The posters who dislike this film are apparently unfamiliar with the term "character study", which is what this film is. Redford plays a real man, a man who finds himself in trouble at sea through no fault of his own. And he does everything he can think of to get himself out of that trouble. Perhaps he shaves because he is trying to keep to a normal routine. He eats, too, and sleeps. And in any case, he shaves before the storm hits.

Like or dislike this movie on its merits but disliking it because it is "boring" or "has no dialogue" or "only one nameless character" says nothing about the film, but quite a lot about the commenters.

reply

I found the character exasperating because he never exhibited any sense of urgency to deal with any of the things that went wrong. If he didn't care enough to jump to and deal with the water pouring in, why should I care about his life or what happened to him? I assumed he had little sailing experience or skills and really only set out on his journey to commit suicide. It mostly looked as if he didn't care if he lived or died. He left an open bottle of booze sitting on his table when life that day had already shown him that his boat could suddenly strike something and everything could be upset in a moment's notice. His galley and living area was a mess of objects that were not tied down. Early on, he ate canned goods and left the fresh food. Eat all the fresh food first, then eat the canned goods. He had no way to wash dishes, but he used a plate instead of just eating out of the pan he had cooked in. If he didn't care, why should I? And I really didn't believe he was saved in the end. I think that last scene was a metaphor for him going to Heaven.

reply

Well i gave it a 3..

I agree largely with Alainamac here, most of what he does is so unlike what any experienced sailor would do..
and he sees a storm coming then waits till he is in it to storm proof his sails WTF?..
and when things get very critical he didnt even make a angry or scared face expression very bad and unrealistic acting....... the most realistic thing was his F-word yell..

the idea is okay it could have been an semi entertaining movie for a late and sleepless winter night but it should only have been 40min long at most.

and on large ships like the 2 container ships the radars should have picked him up so that they at least would be looking to see what was out there..

full of flaws and bad acting it only deserves a 3 rating because it was still catching enough to watch till the end.

reply

+1

reply

In real life he would have talked out loud more. A seasoned sailor would have made sure his survival gear I.E. water was good and bleached...
We are left to guess so many things, like why did he wake up distraught before he even realized he was bringing on water. Why was he alone? Why didn't he sign the note? He made apologies to someone in the beginning, so in reality he would have wanted them to, even by the slimmest of chances, know that he tried and he was sorry... His radio cable came undone, he climbs up and hooks it back up but then doesn't try the radio again???
He would have made sure he knew how to operate the flares way before needing to. He left his life boat tethered to his sinking boat and slept all night like that? No way a Sailor would make such a dangerous mistake.
Then we are left to guess if he was actually rescued or hallucinating...Too many things left to guess means a writer who could not fill the void...
Robert Redford is the ONLY reason I watched the movie till the end. Only RR could take such a poorly written flick and make it watchable.
If you need more reasons then that, watch the movie again!!!

reply

well said. can't stand unimaginative writers and their audiences who think they are clever because they leave the ending up to the audience. It can be done write, but not often and certainly not here.

reply

Though I didn't give it a 4 (I gave it a 6 as it left me feeling depressed throughout the film), when I watched it on a flight to the US last week.

Because the Boeing Dreamliner had a electronic tinting window, everyone of them darkened even in bright sunlight like everybody were allergic to bright sunlight. Watching it in the dark made me feel like I'd lost the will to live, which was an absolute opposite to Gravity where there was hope for every situation.

reply

Gravity where there was hope for every situation

Gravity. Where an experienced astronaut has a tantrum in outer space. Where she can't figure out one thing to do to save herself. Where she panics and yells and carries on like a bratty teenager. Yeah, she talked to herself, all right, but what good did it do her?

Talk about a bad movie! Gravity was a waste of two normally decent actors and two hours of everyone's time. All it had going for it was the special effects.
