Is it just me who think kids movies are being dumbed down?

Maybe the same applies with all movies in general. No thought process is needed. Kids movies especially likes of Smurfs 2 are horribly dumbed down to the point where you could switch your brain off for a couple of hours. Maybe kids are getting more stupid? Is it just me?

With 1 or 2 exceptions, it's the live-action kids movies that are getting dumber and dumber. While there are still bad animated movies out there, most of them tend to be good.

Compared to when? Kids films from 30-, 40-, 50-years ago were hardly MENSA-development material. Any that were decent were because they were based on popular and well-written books, like Mark Twain's. Even Disney's were based on old fairy tales and, while entertaining for children, again, were not exactly intellectually engaging.

No. if anything it is only lately that we saw one of two movies aimed directly at kids that arent written simplistically (Rango comes to mind).

No.
There are lots of very sharply scripted kids movies around today.
The OP seems to be aspiring to a golden age which never existed.

Are you sure it is not just that you are getting older? When I watch something I enjoyed as a kid, I can't help but wonder why I ever liked it at all. If you are no longer a kid, I'd hope it seems dumb.

Thats kinda the point.
Ever hear of Dukes of Hazzard, Mister Ed, Sienfeld, etc
and then, bills, taxes, jobs
thankful for mindless entertainment

All movies are being dumbed down.
Sure, there have always been dumb movies, but there weren't so many that were financially successful. If this movie had been released when I was a kid, I wouldn't have wanted to see it, and my parents also wouldn't have taken me because they would never sit through it.
There are also good movies now, but you have to look past the Smurfs and Transformers and similar garbage to find it.
I really have no idea why people pay to go see this stuff in the theater, with so many choices of good, cheap entertainment available.

Also, recent movies like Jurassic World and Godzilla are being dumbed down as well; there's basically no good plot, no likable characters, just awesome special effects that instantly wow audiences into forgetting both the former flaws.

Definitely isn't just you..there was plenty of dumb movies for kids when I was growing up that I can't enjoy now even with nostalgia. But there was plenty of smart ones that even my parents loved watching back then and now, Secret of NIMH,Who framed Roger Rabbit, The land before time, Honey I shrunk the kids, All dogs go to heaven and even a not so well known Canadian film called Tommy Tricker and the stamp traveler it's a little silly but the imagination behind it is pretty amazing and it tries to be somewhat educational without being overly preachy I knew a lot of kids who got into stamp collecting after seeing it. Anyway it seemed somewhere around the mid to late 90s kids movies started getting lighter in tone and the story dumbed down. Now it's ridiculous how little effort is put into the story and how CGI has taken over. My son is 2 and is pretty much entertained by anything but he also enjoys the movies from my childhood. Theres still some smart movies out there but it's mostly CGI slapstick with recycled plots. Oh and another movie I forgot to add to my list of smart ,well thought out movies is The Neverending story. That's still a favorite in my family.
