Was this max security prison a rehash/reused Crematoria prison from Chronicles of Riddick? They seem similar. Maybe Riddick is hidden as an easter egg somewhere in the Kyln.

The Kyln was created in 2004 and that is when Chronicles came out as well. It is doubtful one ripped off the other.

Outside of the US, these types of communal prisons are common.
