Finding Joe and Yourself

I didn’t know much about Joseph Campbell and his work prior to watching Finding Joe; but going in with a completely fresh and blank slate may have worked in my favor. The film picks you up and throws you back into your childhood in a way, training your mind to consume and understand J. Campbell’s theories of bliss and the heroic cycle with a freer and less clogged mind.

The scenes of the film are each led in by a powerful, individual quote by Campbell, such as, “Follow your bliss and God will open doors for you when there were only walls.” From here, different writers and celebrities elaborate on the deeper meanings of what is hidden beneath Campbell’s words. I found this brilliant because you get to hear so many different angles and stories as the course of the “hero’s journey” is explained and unraveled.

This film assured me that happiness is not just going to fall from the sky, however it is close, it’s in our selves. Joseph Campbell and this film set out to brighten the viewer’s day and shed some insightful light on their lives. Promising that if you follow your bliss, there will always be the brightest light at the end of the darkest tunnel.
